Chapter 8 - The Price of Defiance

The shockwave threw Moretti, Salvatore, and the guards to the concrete floor. Smoke, pulverized dust, and tongues of orange flame billowed into the cavernous warehouse.

Through the gaping hole in the wall, three armored trucks smashed into the facility, their headlights blinding the darkness. From behind the iron wreckage emerged Roman Costa, an automatic combat shotgun in his hands, followed by dozens of tactical soldiers in black body armor.

""Kill them!"" Salvatore screamed, scrambling behind an iron container and firing wildly.

The refinery instantly transformed into a slaughterhouse. Gunfire echoed like rolling thunder off the rusted steel walls. Roman marched forward into the hail of bullets with terrifying indifference, firing with lethal accuracy. Every enemy soldier who raised a weapon against him dropped instantly to the floor. Roman wasn't taking cover; he was a force of nature tearing through flesh and bone, his eyes locked entirely on the steel pillar where Norah was tied.

""Norah!"" Roman bellowed over the roar of battle.

""Roman!"" she cried out, tears of relief blurring her vision.

Salvatore, realizing that Moretti’s men were being utterly massacred, panicked. He drew his sidearm, breaking from cover, and sprinted straight toward Norah, intending to use her as a human shield.

""Stay back, Roman!"" Salvatore shrieked, pressing the barrel of his gun against Norah’s temple. ""Drop your weapon or I blow her brains out!""

The gunfire in the room slowly ceased as Roman’s men eliminated the last of Moretti’s guards. Vincent Moretti lay dead near the catwalk, riddled with shrapnel. The only sound left was the crackle of fire and the ragged breathing of the survivors.

Roman stopped fifteen paces away. He lowered the shotgun slowly, letting it drop to the concrete floor with a heavy thud.

""Let her go, Salvatore,"" Roman said, his voice eerily calm. ""Your fight is with me.""

""You ruined me!"" Salvatore screamed, sweat pouring down his face, his hand shaking violently against Norah’s skull. ""I gave twenty years to your father and to you! And you threatened to cut my tongue out over a whore!""

""She is not a whore,"" Roman said softly, taking a slow, imperceptible step forward. ""She is my wife.""

Norah’s breath hitched, her heart swelling with an emotion so powerful it eclipsed the terror of the gun at her head.

""Liar!"" Salvatore yelled. In that split second of emotional hysteria, Salvatore’s focus wavered from Roman to scream into Norah’s face.

Norah didn't hesitate. Remembering Roman’s ruthless resolve, she threw her head backward with all her strength, slamming her skull directly into Salvatore’s nose.

Bone cracked loudly. Salvatore screamed, stumbling back and clutching his shattered face.

In a fraction of a second, Roman drew a concealed blade from his boot and closed the distance like a ghost. He grabbed Salvatore by the throat, driving the traitor against the steel pillar with bone-crushing force.

""I promised you what would happen if you touched her,"" Roman whispered into Salvatore’s ear.

With one brutal, merciless sweep of the blade, Roman ended Salvatore's life. The traitor collapsed into a heap on the floor, still and lifeless.

Roman dropped the knife and fell to his knees in front of Norah. His hands, covered in blood and soot, shook violently as he sliced through the thick ropes binding her wrists and ankles. The moment she was free, Norah collapsed into his chest, burying her face into the curve of his neck, sobbing uncontrollably.

Roman wrapped his massive arms around her, pulling her so tightly against his body that she could barely breathe. He buried his face in her hair, his powerful frame trembling. For the first time in his life, the merciless Don of New York was crying silent tears of sheer relief.

""I have you,"" Roman whispered over and over, kissing her temples, her bruised cheek, her trembling lips. ""I have you, Norah. You’re safe. You’re home.""
