Chapter 2 - The Rules of the Inner Circle

The dynamic of the estate changed overnight. Word traveled through the servant quarters with the speed of wildfire. Staff members who had previously ignored Norah now cast wary, calculating glances in her direction. Everyone understood what an assignment to Roman Costa’s private wing meant: you either became his trusted confidant, or you disappeared into the night when you saw something you shouldn't have seen.
Norah's days were no longer spent scrubbing baseboards or hauling heavy laundry baskets through the basement tunnels. Instead, she was chained to Roman’s schedule. She laid out his suits, organized the classified files he brought home in locked leather briefcases, and served him dinner in his private study whenever he worked late into the night.
On Thursday evening, the mansion went on lockdown. Heavy black SUVs rolled past the iron gates, and armed guards in tactical gear took positions along the perimeter gardens. Norah was dusting the mahogany bookshelves in the library when the double doors swung open. Roman strode inside, surrounded by three of his highest-ranking lieutenants. Among them was Marco, his ruthless underboss, and Salvatore, an older capo with a reputation for merciless cruelty.
""Norah,"" Roman called out before he even reached the long conference table. ""Pour the scotch. Then stay.""
Norah froze, the dusting cloth clutched tightly in her hands. Marco and Salvatore glanced at her, surprise flickering across their weathered, cynical faces. It was an unspoken law in the Costa syndicate that no domestic staff was ever permitted in the room during high-level strategic briefings.
""Sir?"" she asked hesitatingly. ""Should I not leave you to your business?""
""I said stay,"" Roman repeated without raising his voice, pulling off his jacket and draping it across the high-backed leather chair at the head of the table. ""Stand by the sideboard. Keep the glasses full.""
Norah quickly set down her cleaning tools, washed her hands in the adjoining wet bar, and brought a crystal decanter along with heavy tumblers to the table. As she poured the amber liquid for the three men, she felt Salvatore’s predatory gaze lingering on her hips and her face. Salvatore had a reputation for taking whatever he wanted, and Norah knew the look in his eyes all too well.
""Who’s the new girl, Roman?"" Salvatore asked, his voice a raspy drawl as he picked up his glass. ""A little young to be tending your private quarters, isn't she? I thought you preferred old Mrs. Gable.""
Roman didn't touch his glass. He leaned back in his leather chair, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. ""Her name is Norah. And her presence here is none of your concern, Salvatore.""
Salvatore chuckled dismissively, waving a hand adorned with heavy gold rings. ""Just saying. A pretty little thing like that shouldn't be hidden away cleaning dust. If you ever get tired of having her around, you know my estate in Long Island could always use a fresh face.""
The temperature in the room plummeted instantly. Marco stopped rustling his papers. Norah felt a shiver of pure dread skate down her spine.
Roman leaned forward slowly, resting his forearms on the polished mahogany table. The quiet intensity radiating from him was far more terrifying than a roar of rage. ""Salvatore,"" Roman said, each syllable measured, quiet, and lethal. ""If you ever look at her again with those eyes, or if you ever let her name pass through your teeth in that tone, I will have your tongue cut out and served to your dogs. Do you understand me?""
The room went dead silent. Salvatore’s smirk vanished, replaced by an ashen, stunned pallor. He opened his mouth to defend himself, but Roman’s gaze held the promise of an immediate grave.
""I asked you a question, capo,"" Roman whispered.
Salvatore swallowed hard and dropped his eyes to the table. ""Understood, boss.""
Roman turned his head slightly toward Norah. She was clutching the empty crystal decanter against her chest, her knuckles bone-white, her eyes wide with shock. For the second time in three days, the most feared man on the East Coast had publicly claimed dominion over her—not as a servant, but as something sacred under his absolute protection.

""Refill my glass, Norah,"" Roman ordered gently, his voice softening in a way none of his men had ever heard before.
Her hands trembled as the amber liquid filled his tumbler, but when their eyes met, Roman didn't look away. There was an unspoken message in the depths of his dark irises: You are mine to protect, and the world will learn to bow before you.
