Chapter 3 - Blood on the Ledger

The revelation of Roman’s fierce protection did not bring Norah peace; it brought an overwhelming sense of danger. To the outside world, she was merely an indebted maid. But in the underworld, being favored by the king made you an open target for everyone who wanted his crown.

Late Friday night, rain hammered against the glass windows of the estate. A thunderstorm raged over the coastline, throwing violent flashes of lightning across Roman’s study. Norah was quietly organizing the paperwork scattered across his massive desk while Roman stood across the room, speaking into a secure encrypted phone.

""Double the security at the port terminal,"" Roman commanded into the receiver. ""The Moretti family is getting desperate. If they try to intercept the midnight shipment, wipe them out. No survivors.""

He hung up, tossing the phone onto the leather couch. He rubbed his temples, lines of deep fatigue etching his handsome features. Norah watched him carefully from across the room. Underneath the terrifying exterior of the mafia kingpin, she saw a man carrying the crushing weight of a bloody empire on his back.

As she stacked the files, a loose, aged document slipped from a leather folder and fluttered to the carpet. Norah knelt to pick it up. Her eyes accidentally caught the bold lettering at the top: DEBT CONSOLIDATION: ANTHONY VANCE.

Anthony Vance. Her father.

Norah froze on her knees. Her breath caught in her throat. Her eyes frantically skimmed down the ledger. For two years, she had believed she was slowly repaying a five-hundred-thousand-dollar gambling debt through hard labor, surviving on crumbs while faceless loan sharks dictated her existence. But as she read the itemized balance sheet, the blood drained completely from her face.

The entire debt had been marked: PAID IN FULL — EIGHTEEN MONTHS AGO.

The signature at the bottom of the release form belonged to Roman Costa.

Norah stood up abruptly, holding the paper in her trembling hands. The paper rustled loudly in the quiet room. Roman turned from the window, his sharp eyes catching the pale horror on her face.

""Norah?"" he asked, taking a step toward her.

""What is this?"" she demanded, her voice cracking with a mixture of betrayal, confusion, and raw fury. For the first time in two years, her fear of him was eclipsed by sheer emotional agony. She held up the paper. ""What is this, Mr. Costa?!""

Roman stopped walking. His jaw clenched, and for a fleeting second, an emotion resembling guilt crossed his stony features.

""Norah, put that back on the desk,"" he said calmly, though there was a rare edge of tension in his voice.

""You paid it off,"" she cried, tears spilling over her eyelashes and tracking down her cheeks. ""You paid my father’s debt eighteen months ago! Why am I still here? Why did your men tell me every Friday that I still owed hundreds of thousands of dollars? Why did you keep me trapped in this house, scrubbing your floors, living in terror every single day?""

Roman stood unmoving, weathering her tears like a stone cliff resisting a storm. ""Because if I told you the debt was paid, you would have packed your bags and walked out that gate,"" he said, his voice dropping into a deep, haunting register.

""Of course I would have!"" Norah screamed, taking a step back as he slowly closed the distance between them. ""I was a prisoner! I thought I was working for my freedom!""

Roman reached her. He didn't grab her arms or restrain her. Instead, he framed her face with his large, warm hands, his thumbs gently wiping away the hot tears cascading down her cheeks. Norah gasped, trying to pull away, but his touch was magnetic, holding her captive without force.

""You were never a prisoner, Norah,"" Roman whispered, his dark eyes ablaze with an obsession he could no longer hide. ""Your father borrowed money from loan sharks connected to the Moretti syndicate. They didn't just want the money back; they wanted you. They were going to sell you to a brothel in Atlantic City the day after your father died.""

Norah’s breath hitched, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief.

""I bought the debt,"" Roman continued, his voice fiercely steady. ""I bought the debt, I killed the three men who came looking for you, and I brought you here. I kept you in this house because outside those walls, you were a dead woman walking. And I kept you cleaning because I was a coward who didn't know how to keep you close to me without an excuse.""

Norah stared at him, her chest heaving, trapped between the horror of what her father had done and the unbelievable truth of Roman's possessive sanctuary.
