Chapter 1 - The Weight of His Shadow

Norah did not sleep that night. Her small bedroom on the top floor of the Costa estate felt smaller and colder than ever before. For two years, she had survived inside this fortress of limestone and blood by making herself a shadow. She walked on the balls of her feet, cast her eyes downward whenever heavy boots echoed along the marble hallways, and never spoke unless an order required an acknowledgment. But now, the shadow had been thrust directly into the light. Roman Costa’s intense, dark gaze burned behind her eyelids every time she closed them. She could still hear the low, dangerous gravel in his voice: ""And you will stay away from the mechanics.""

Dawn broke across the estate in sharp slivers of gray. Norah was up an hour before her alarm, trading her usual faded maid uniform for the crisp, pressed black linen reserved for the master suite attendants. Her hands shook as she pinned her hair into its customary neat bun. When she stepped into the private wing of the second floor, the air smelled entirely different from the rest of the mansion. It smelled of imported cedar, expensive bourbon, and the subtle, sharp tang of gun oil and cold cologne. It smelled like Roman.

She held a heavy brass tray bearing fresh black coffee, thick cream he never used, and the morning financial papers. Reaching the double doors of his private quarters, she took three deep breaths to steady her pounding heart. She tapped twice, as protocol demanded, and waited.

""Enter,"" came the cold baritone from inside.

Norah pushed the heavy mahogany door open. The master suite was colossal, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the manicured grounds and the distant, guarded iron gates. Roman stood near the edge of the glass, buttoning the cuffs of a crisp charcoal shirt. His back was turned, revealing broad, powerful shoulders and the dark outline of a tattoo winding up his neck. A holstered sidearm sat unceremoniously on the dressing table.

""Good morning, Mr. Costa,"" Norah whispered, keeping her chin tucked down. She crossed the plush rug with silent, practiced steps and set the tray upon the marble-topped console near his desk.

Roman did not answer immediately. He rolled his sleeves to his forearms with meticulous precision, exposing corded muscle and faint silver scars that told stories of a brutal rise to absolute power. When he finally turned, his sharp hazel eyes locked directly onto her face, scanning her from the trembling tips of her fingers to the flush rising on her throat.

""Look at me when you speak in my quarters,"" Roman said quietly.

Norah swallowed, forcing her eyes up to meet his. The air left her lungs. Close up, Roman Costa was utterly suffocating. He carried an aura of absolute violence wrapped in tailored perfection. His jawline was sharp as an iron blade, his cheekbones high, and his mouth set in an unyielding line.

""Good morning, sir,"" she repeated, her voice clearer this time, though her pulse hammered wildly against her ribs.

Roman moved toward her. He didn't walk fast; he glided with the calm, predatory grace of a man who owned everything in his sight and feared nothing on earth. He stopped just two feet away. The sheer heat radiating from him made her skin prickle beneath the thin linen of her collar.

""Finn was reassigned this morning,"" Roman murmured, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. ""He is now stationed at the container docks in South Jersey. He won't be fixing any more coffee makers in my house.""

Norah’s breath hitched. A wave of guilt and terror swept through her chest. ""Mr. Costa... please. He didn't do anything wrong. I was the one who made the joke. If someone has to be punished—""

""Punished?"" Roman tilted his head, taking one deliberate step closer until Norah was forced to take a step back, her spine meeting the cold panel of his bookshelf. He leaned in, trapping her without ever laying a finger on her. His scent enveloped her completely. ""Do you think I sent him away to punish him, Norah?""

""I... I don't know,"" she whispered, her eyes wide with apprehension.

May you like

Roman leaned in closer, his lips mere inches from the curve of her ear. ""I sent him away because I don't like men looking at things that belong under my roof. And I especially don't like another man making you laugh when you look at me like I'm a demon coming to collect your soul.""

Norah held her breath, unable to move, unable to speak, as Roman reached out a calloused hand and gently brushed a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. His touch was warm, surprisingly tender, and completely terrifying.
