Chapter 5 - The Gala of Wolves

The Grand Plaza Ballroom was a glittering palace of champagne, diamonds, and disguised sociopaths. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over hundreds of elite guests—corrupt judges, wealthy socialites, and ruthless mob bosses masquerading as legitimate titans of industry.
When the grand mahogany double doors opened to announce Roman Costa’s arrival, the entire ballroom fell into a hush of reverence and dread.
Walking beside him, Norah felt every eye in the room drill into her. She looked unrecognizable. Roman had spared no expense. She wore a floor-length emerald green silk gown with a daringly low back that contrasted sharply with her porcelain skin. Her dark hair cascaded over her bare shoulders in soft, elegant waves, and around her throat rested an antique diamond necklace that had once belonged to Roman’s grandmother—a public declaration of her status that every mafia capo in the room recognized instantly.
Roman was clad in a bespoke black tuxedo, his posture commanding and aristocratic. His hand rested firmly on the small of Norah’s back, guiding her through the sea of whispering guests.
""Keep your head up, Norah,"" Roman murmured leaning down, his warm breath tickling her ear. ""You outshine every single person in this room. Let them stare.""
Norah lifted her chin, meeting the curious, jealous, and calculating glares of the crowd. Beside Roman, she didn't feel like the frightened girl who scrubbed stains from hardwood floors; she felt invincible.
At the center of the ballroom, a distinguished older man with slicked-back silver hair and a cold sneer approached them. It was Vincent Moretti, the patriarch of the rival Moretti crime family, flanked by two burly bodyguards.
""Roman,"" Moretti greeted smoothly, though his eyes were sharp as razors. ""It is rare to see you attend a social gathering, let alone bring an escort. Won't you introduce us to this breathtaking creature?""
Roman’s hand on Norah’s back tightened slightly, an unspoken barrier between her and the viper before them. ""Vincent. This is Norah Vance.""
Moretti’s eyes flashed with sudden, sinister recognition at the surname. A cold, knowing smile spread across his thin lips. ""Vance? Not Anthony Vance's daughter, by any chance? The late Anthony Vance who left behind a rather substantial... unpaid tab?""
Norah’s breath hitched. A cold prickle of fear washed over her skin.
Moretti took half a step closer, looking Norah up and down like a prize piece of meat. ""I remember your father well, my dear. He swore to me that he had collateral worth ten times his debt. Seeing you tonight, I must admit, he wasn't exaggerating. It seems Roman snatched you from the gutter before my collectors could finalize the transfer.""
Before Moretti could take another breath, Roman stepped directly in front of Norah, eclipsing her completely from the old boss’s view. The air in the immediate perimeter turned sub-zero.
Roman reached out, took the champagne flute from Moretti’s hand, and dropped it onto the marble floor. It shattered into a hundred sparkling pieces with a sharp, violent crack that silenced the surrounding half of the ballroom.
""Choose your next words with absolute care, Vincent,"" Roman whispered, his voice vibrating with a deadly calm that caused even Moretti's armed bodyguards to step back nervously. ""You are speaking to the woman who carries my heart. If your mouth utters another syllable regarding her father or her past, I will not wait for our ceasefire to expire. I will slaughter your sons before midnight, and I will hang your head from the gates of your own estate.""
Vincent Moretti’s arrogant smile vanished. The old man realized with chilling clarity that Roman wasn't merely defending a mistress; he was ready to start a full-scale war over her honor.
""Enjoy your evening, Roman,"" Moretti spat out stiffly, backing away into the crowd.
Norah placed a trembling hand on Roman’s forearm. ""Roman...""

Roman turned to face her, the terrifying darkness in his eyes melting away into tender concern the moment he looked at her. ""Are you alright?""
""Yes,"" she whispered, looking into his eyes with absolute clarity. ""Because I'm with you.""
