Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of a Collapse

The spectacle that followed was broadcast across every regional business wire within eight minutes.
Grant backed away toward the edge of the stage, his hands raised in panic. ""Mother! Call Arthur! Call the senator! Tell them this is a mistake!""
Margaret Mercer was weeping hysterically near the front table, clutching her pearls as society matrons who had kissed her cheek twenty minutes earlier deliberately picked up their evening purses and walked away from her table. Brooke Mercer sat paralyzed, staring at her phone as notifications poured in: Mercer Energy stock was dropping like a stone in after-hours institutional trading.
The federal marshals didn't hesitate. They stepped forward, grabbed Grant by his wrists, and spun him around, locking the cold steel cuffs behind his back with two loud, sharp clicks.
""Hannah! Please!"" Grant screamed, his composure entirely gone, tears streaming down his flushed face as he was dragged down the stage stairs. ""Think about thirteen years! We built this together! You can't let them take me like this! Hannah!""
Hannah didn't say a word. She watched him pass, her expression completely serene. She remembered the nights she had spent alone eating cold takeout while he was out with Olivia. She remembered the kids' table. She remembered his words: Investors don't want a quiet lab technician. They want polish.
Olivia Price tried to slip off the side of the stage toward the dressing rooms, but two forensic accountants from the Securities and Exchange Commission were already waiting at the exit door.
""Ms. Price,"" one of the agents said, holding up an official summons. ""You signed your name as Managing Director on three fraudulent debt filings this past quarter. You need to come with us to answer a few questions regarding executive asset dissipation.""
Olivia turned back toward the stage, her eyes wide with terror, the thirty-carat emerald necklace looking like a collar of doom around her neck. ""I was only consulting! Grant told me it was all approved! I didn't know!""
""Tell it to the grand jury, sweetheart,"" Carlyle Vance said dryly as the agents escorted her away.
The ballroom was in total disarray. Guests were standing on chairs, waiters were frozen with silver trays, and the media cameras were flashing relentlessly.
Hannah stepped back to the podium. She tapped the microphone once.
The room instantly fell silent again. Every single person in that hall—oil tycoons, governors, socialites who had ignored her for a decade—looked at Hannah with genuine, unadulterated awe.

""The gala will continue,"" Hannah said calmly into the microphone. ""Dinner is served. The champagne is paid for—courtesy of Sovereign Reed Energy. Enjoy your evening.""
She stepped away from the podium, leaving the microphone standing alone under the bright lights.
