Chapter 7 - The Billionaire at the Ballroom Door

The silence in the Bellmont Grand ballroom was so absolute you could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents overhead.
Grant Mercer’s knuckles turned white around the edges of the podium. ""Carlyle?"" he stammered into the microphone, his polished veneer cracking in real time. ""I... I think there's some confusion. Hannah isn't involved in our transaction. She's seated back there for personal reasons. The executive team is up here.""
Carlyle Vance turned around slowly. He didn't bother using a microphone; his natural voice carried the weight of forty years commanding offshore drilling rigs and boardroom battlefields.
""Son,"" Carlyle rumbled, ""the only confusion in this room is inside your own skull.""
A collective gasp rippled through the tables. Margaret Mercer stood up so fast her champagne glass overturned, soaking the linen tablecloth in Dom Pérignon. ""Mr. Vance! What is the meaning of this? My son built Mercer Energy!""
Carlyle reached into his interior coat pocket, pulled out a pair of gold-rimmed reading glasses, and set them on his nose. ""Your son built a house of cards on leased ground, ma'am. And the landlord has decided not to renew.""
Hannah rose gracefully from her chair. She smoothed down her black gown, picked up her burgundy clutch, and walked toward the center aisle. Carlyle stepped in beside her, offering his arm with genuine warmth. Together, they walked up the center aisle toward the elevated stage.
Every single camera in the room turned away from Grant and Olivia and focused squarely on Hannah.
Grant was sweating now, dark stains spreading beneath the armpits of his bespoke tuxedo. ""Hannah! Stop this right now! What ridiculous game are you playing?""
Olivia stepped forward, grabbing the podium microphone with trembling, manicured hands. ""Security! Where is security? Escort this woman out! She's disrupting a private corporate event!""
Two uniformed hotel security guards stepped forward, but they stopped dead in their tracks when Marcus Sterling, accompanied by two federal marshals in dark windbreakers, stepped onto the perimeter of the stage.
""Nobody touches Mrs. Reed-Mercer,"" Marcus announced, flashing certified federal badges. ""Unless you'd like to spend the weekend in federal detention for obstructing court-ordered asset preservation.""
Hannah ascended the stage stairs with effortless poise. She didn't look angry; she looked like a sovereign taking back a throne that had been temporarily occupied by squatter royalty.
She stood three feet from Grant. Up close, she could smell the expensive cologne he used to cover the scent of fear.
""You asked me earlier what I brought to the table, Grant,"" Hannah said. Her voice, amplified by the stage monitors, was calm, melodic, and devastating. ""You told me you were cutting the anchor.""

""Hannah, shut up,"" Grant hissed, his voice dropping into a desperate, furious whisper away from the mic. ""Whatever you're doing, I will ruin you. I will leave you on the street.""
""You can't ruin me, Grant,"" Hannah replied, opening her burgundy clutch. ""Because you don't own me. And you never owned the ground beneath your feet.""
