Chapter 4 - The Kids' Table at the Country Club

By Friday morning, the Mercer household had become a staging ground for Grant’s grand coronation. Florists, tuxedo delivery drivers, and makeup artists swarmed the halls. Grant was in his private dressing suite, practicing his keynote speech into a full-length mirror.

Hannah entered silently. She wore a simple, tailored black evening dress with a high collar—understated, elegant, and timeless. In her hand, she carried a burgundy leather clutch with a discreet gold clasp.

Grant glanced at her reflection through the glass, frowning slightly as he adjusted his black bow tie. ""You're actually coming tonight?""

""I am your wife, Grant. It's the annual gala.""

Grant sighed, turning around with an expression of weary indulgence. ""Look, Hannah. I appreciate that you want to be supportive. But I need to be completely honest with you. Tonight, I am announcing our restructuring on stage. Carlyle Vance is officially arriving to sign the final partnership contract. In that announcement, I am publicly naming Olivia as the Managing Partner and future co-chair of Mercer Enterprises.""

He walked over, resting his hands heavily on Hannah’s shoulders. His touch felt foreign, contaminated. ""I want you to sit at Table Twelve with Brooke and the younger cousins. Stay out of the media spotlight. Don't cause a scene. If you behave tonight, I will make sure the divorce settlement leaves you with the Buckhead house and five million dollars in cash. You’ll never have to work another day in your life.""

""Five million dollars,"" Hannah said, her voice flat. ""For thirteen years of work.""

""It's more money than anyone in your family has ever seen!"" Grant snapped, his patience evaporating. ""Be grateful, Hannah! Olivia’s family brought three sovereign wealth contacts to the table this week alone. What have you brought me lately? Technical complaints and land survey disputes! You’ve become an anchor around my neck, and I am cutting the cord tonight.""

Hannah looked at him—really looked at him. She saw the weak, insecure boy beneath the tailored tuxedo, a man who had built an entire empire on a foundation of stolen labor and false credit, now genuinely believing he was a king.

""I understand completely,"" Hannah said softly.

Grant blinked, caught off guard by her submission. ""Good. Then we have an understanding. Take your own town car to the hotel. Olivia and I are riding in the lead limousine with Mother.""

""Of course,"" Hannah said.

An hour later, Hannah stepped out of the black sedan at the Bellmont Grand in downtown Atlanta. The street was lined with paparazzi, television vans, and hundreds of high-society guests filing beneath the brilliant marquee.

Hannah did not enter through the red carpet. She walked through a side entrance, where two men in charcoal suits were waiting for her near the service elevator.

One of them was Marcus Sterling, the top corporate litigator in the southeastern United States. Beside him stood Arthur Campbell, holding an accordion folder secured with red wax seals.

""Is everything executed?"" Hannah asked Marcus.

""Filed in federal court in Houston at 4:45 p.m.,"" Marcus replied with a fierce grin. ""Notarized, stamped, and served electronically to Mercer Energy’s corporate secretary at precisely 4:47. The Delaware court has already granted the temporary restraining order freezing all mineral asset transfers.""

""And Carlyle Vance?""

""His private jet touched down at Peachtree DeKalb Airport thirty minutes ago,"" Marcus said. ""He signed the co-ownership agreement inside the terminal hangar. He's en route right now.""

Hannah opened her burgundy clutch. She slipped the certified copies inside, snapped the gold clasp shut, and turned toward the grand ballroom doors.

""Let's go watch my husband announce his future,"" she said.
