Chapter 5 - The Master Key in a Burgundy Clutch

The grand ballroom of the Bellmont Grand was a sea of crystal, white orchids, and champagne towers. Nearly four hundred of the most influential figures in American energy, banking, and politics were seated beneath the glittering chandeliers.
Hannah made her way to Table Twelve, positioned near the far back corner by the service doors.
Grant’s sister, Brooke, was already seated there, wearing a shimmering silver gown and sipping champagne. When Brooke saw Hannah, she didn't even attempt to hide her sneer.
""Oh, look,"" Brooke said loudly to her husband. ""The ghost appears. I thought Grant said you had a migraine and couldn't make it.""
""I felt better,"" Hannah said calmly, pulling out her chair and sitting down.
Brooke leaned across the table. ""You know everyone is talking about Olivia, right? She’s wearing a thirty-carat emerald necklace Grant bought her in New York. Mother says Olivia is the first woman Grant has ever been with who actually looks like she belongs on a yacht.""
Hannah placed her burgundy clutch on the linen tablecloth. ""Emeralds are lovely stones. Soft, though. They fracture very easily under pressure.""
Brooke rolled her eyes and turned back to her phone, furiously texting in a family group chat that Hannah had been removed from months ago.
At the head table near the stage sat Margaret Mercer, glowing like an empress dowager, surrounded by her handpicked elite. Beside her sat Olivia Price, practically vibrating with triumphant energy, leaning in close to whisper in Grant’s ear while the flashbulbs of society photographers illuminated their smiles.
At 8:15 p.m., the master of ceremonies took the podium.
""Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, please welcome the President, Chief Executive Officer, and founder of Mercer Energy Strategies—Mr. Grant Mercer!""
The ballroom erupted into polite, rhythmic applause. Grant stood up, buttoned his tuxedo jacket with practiced elegance, and kissed Olivia on the cheek before climbing the stage steps. Margaret Mercer clapped enthusiastically, casting a dismissive glance toward Table Twelve.
Grant reached the podium, adjusted the microphone, and waited until the room settled into an expectant hush.
""Thirteen years ago,"" Grant began, his voice booming through the state-of-the-art sound system, ""I started Mercer Energy with nothing more than an idea and an iron will to succeed. People told me that an independent Southern firm couldn't compete with the global conglomerates. They said the shale reserves in Texas were too complex, too volatile, too risky.""
He paused, offering his signature boardroom smile. ""They were wrong. Tonight, Mercer Energy stands on the precipice of a historic sixteen-billion-dollar partnership that will redefine energy independence in this country. But an empire is only as strong as the people who stand at the helm.""
Grant’s eyes swept across the room, purposely bypassing Table Twelve, and locked onto the front table.
""For too long, true leadership requires making hard decisions. It requires recognizing who holds you back, and who carries you forward into greatness. Everyone deserves to know who the real lady of Mercer House is.""
He extended his right hand toward the head table. ""Olivia, please join me.""
The room let out a collective gasp, followed instantly by thunderous applause led by Margaret Mercer, who shot to her feet with tears of pride in her eyes. Brooke laughed beside Hannah, thrusting her smartphone into the air to record the moment.
Olivia stood up gracefully, pretending to be surprised, and ascended the stage. Grant caught her hand, pulling her against his side, and handed her the microphone.

Hannah sat entirely still, her hand resting quietly on her burgundy clutch. She felt every gaze in the room shifting between the stage and her table. Pity. Shock. Embarrassment.
Olivia smiled radiant into the lights. ""Thank you,"" she purred. ""Some people wait a long time for the place they deserve. I’m grateful I finally found mine.""
