Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

By sunrise the following morning, the financial world had witnessed the fastest corporate execution in Wall Street history.
The Wall Street Journal ran an emergency headline across its front page: CALLAWAY ALPHA CRUSHED: SHADOW TRUST EXPOSES $100M FRAUD.
Liam’s mugshot, taken under the harsh fluorescent lights of the federal metropolitan detention center, was plastered across every business channel from London to Tokyo.
His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot with exhaustion, and the arrogant smirk was permanently wiped from his face.
Victoria Sterling’s social standing was decimated in an instant. Her family stripped her of her credit accounts, sending her to an estate in upstate New York to avoid the relentless press inquiries.
Meanwhile, inside the 45th floor penthouse office that Liam had occupied only forty-eight hours earlier, Julianne sat behind the massive glass desk.
The name on the frosted glass doors had already been replaced: VANCE STRATEGIC VENTURES.
Arthur Pendelton entered the office carrying a stack of leather folders, setting them down on the desk with a satisfied smile.
"The liquidation of Callaway Capital's remaining assets is complete, Miss Vance," Arthur reported. "All fifty-two junior employees and administrative staff have been paid their full severance packages, along with six-month transition bonuses from the Trust."
Julianne looked up from her tablet. "And the junior analysts Liam abused during the leverage collapse?"
"Every one of them has been offered positions within Vance Logistics and Global Maritime," Arthur confirmed. "They are exceptionally grateful."
"Good," Julianne said softly. "The workers shouldn't suffer because their boss was a sociopath with a gold watch."
Arthur slid a final, plain white envelope across the desk. "A letter arrived from Liam’s court-appointed public defender twenty minutes ago. Liam waived his right to a preliminary hearing. He is pleading guilty to all three counts of wire fraud."
Julianne looked at the envelope but didn't open it. "What does he want, Arthur?"
"He begged the attorney to ask if you would visit him at the federal facility in Brooklyn," Arthur said quietly. "Just once. To discuss what he called 'closure.'"
Julianne picked up the letter, held it between two fingers, and dropped it directly into the brass paper shredder beside her desk.
The machine hummed for three seconds, reducing Liam’s final desperate plea into thin strips of meaningless white paper.
"Closure was achieved when the judge stamped the divorce decree, Arthur," Julianne said, her voice clear and completely unburdened. "Liam Callaway is a chapter that has been permanently closed, burned, and scattered to the wind."
"Very well, Miss Vance," Arthur smiled warmly. "And what are your orders for the rest of the week?"

Julianne looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sparkling morning sun reflecting off the East River.
"Have the jet prepped for Martha's Vineyard," she replied, smiling with genuine, unburdened happiness. "I think it’s time I finally built a life based on my own rules."
