Chapter 7 - The Guillotine Falls

Liam and Victoria took their places directly in front of the center stage, basking in the applause of the three hundred gathered elites.
Marcus Sterling stood behind the podium, his face pale and rigid under the harsh spotlight. He looked out over the crowd, his gaze locking briefly with Julianne, who stood near the rear doors with Arthur Pendelton.
Julianne gave him a microscopic nod.
"Thank you, ladies and gentlemen," Marcus began into the microphone, his voice echoing through the vaulted ballroom. "Tonight was meant to celebrate the expansion of Sterling Capital’s maritime logistics syndication."
Liam smiled broadly, turning his head toward the crowd and flashing his teeth for the news cameras. Victoria squeezed his arm, preening under the spotlight.
"For the past several weeks," Marcus continued, his tone turning grave and heavy, "Sterling Capital was considering an alignment with Callaway Capital and its managing partner, Liam Callaway."
Liam took half a step toward the stairs, preparing to mount the stage to deliver his acceptance remarks.
"However," Marcus announced, his voice dropping into a harsh, unforgiving boom, "following a comprehensive forensic audit conducted over the past twenty-four hours, Sterling Capital has formally severed all associations with Mr. Callaway."
The ballroom instantly went dead silent.
Liam froze mid-stride, his foot hovering over the bottom step of the stage. The smile froze on his face like cracked porcelain.
"What?" Victoria gasped, her eyes darting frantically toward her father. "Dad, what are you saying?"
"Furthermore," Marcus read directly from the legal brief before him, "it has come to our attention that Callaway Capital has operated under fraudulent liquidity representations, masking sixteen-to-one leverage while defaulting on its primary commercial obligations."
A violent chorus of gasps erupted across the room. Hedge fund titans began pulling out their phones, furiously checking market feeds.
"Marcus, stop!" Liam yelled, breaking through the velvet rope and running up the stairs. "What the hell is this? We had a deal! You signed the term sheet yesterday!"
Two towering private security guards intercepted Liam at the edge of the stage, pinning his arms behind his back with effortless force.
"Get your hands off me!" Liam screamed, thrashing against their grip. "I manage fifty million dollars! I’m the Man of the Year!"
At that exact second, the massive projector screens on either side of the stage flickered to life.
Instead of promotional slides for the maritime fund, the screens displayed an emergency regulatory filing stamped by the Securities and Exchange Commission timestamped 10:15 PM.
The headline read: TRADING HALTED: CALLAWAY CAPITAL ASSETS SEIZED UNDER SOVEREIGN LIEN.
Below the legal header was the name of the senior lienholder who had called the forty-five-million-dollar emergency note due that very evening:
The Vance Sovereign Trust — Sole Trustee: Julianne Vance.
Liam stopped fighting the guards, his eyes bulging as he stared at the giant illuminated letters on the screen.
The name echoed in his ears like a tolling church bell.
Julianne Vance.
He turned his head slowly toward the back of the ballroom, looking past the sea of whispering billionaires.

There she stood, bathed in the soft glow of the chandelier light, holding her champagne glass with total, untouchable serenity.
Arthur Pendelton stood beside her, holding a certified black folder, while two federal marshals in dark suits stepped through the ballroom doors, their eyes locked directly on Liam Callaway.
