Chapter 8 - The Cornered Predator

The grand ballroom dissolved into chaotic murmuring as high-profile investors began shouting into their cellphones, frantically ordering their brokers to dump any assets tied to Callaway Capital.

Victoria Sterling backed away from Liam as if he were carrying a contagious plague.

"Victoria, help me!" Liam begged, sweat pouring down his forehead, soaking through his twelve-thousand-dollar collar. "Call your father! This is a technical error! It's a glitch in the clearance system!"

"Get away from me, Liam!" Victoria shrieked, wiping her hand on her gown where he had touched her. "You lied to me! You told me you were solvent! You used me to cover your debts!"

Marcus Sterling stepped down from the podium, glaring at Liam with undisguised venom. "You almost dragged my entire bank into federal receivership, you arrogant fool. You are finished."

The two security guards pushed Liam down the stage steps onto the parquet floor, where Senior Federal Marshal Bradley was already waiting with open handcuffs.

"Liam Callaway?" Marshal Bradley asked, flashing his gold badge.

"Wait, wait!" Liam stammered, his knees trembling violently. "This is a civil matter! It’s a commercial loan dispute! You can’t arrest someone for an accelerated credit line!"

"We aren't arresting you for the loan, Mr. Callaway," Marshal Bradley stated calmly, snapping the steel cuffs around Liam's right wrist. "We are executing an arrest warrant for three counts of bank fraud and securities falsification, based on the audit files submitted by the Vance Sovereign Trust at 8:00 AM."

A loud, agonizing groan escaped Liam’s throat as the second cuff clicked shut.

He looked frantically across the room until his eyes landed on Julianne, who was walking toward him with slow, measured steps.

The surrounding crowd parted like the Red Sea, billionaires and corporate executives bowing their heads in reverence as the true heiress approached.

"Julianne!" Liam cried out, falling to his knees on the dance floor in front of her. "Julianne, please! Tell them this is a mistake! You’re my wife! We lived together for four years!"

"We were divorced yesterday afternoon, Liam," Julianne said softly, stopping three feet away and looking down at him. "You made sure page twelve was very clear about that."

"I was stupid! I was stressed about the fund!" Liam wept openly, tears cutting tracks through his sweat-stained face. "I loved you, Julianne! I never wanted Victoria, it was just business! Please, call Arthur! Tell the trust to release the lien!"

Julianne leaned down slightly, her voice dropping so only he could hear the razor-sharp truth.

"You didn't love me, Liam," she whispered. "You loved having a servant who didn't ask questions. You thought I was weak because I chose to be kind. You thought you could mock my dignity and throw fifty thousand dollars at my feet like scraps from your table."

"I'll give it all back!" Liam sobbed, clutching at the hem of her black silk gown with his cuffed hands. "I'll sign over Callaway Capital! I'll do whatever you want!"

"You don't have anything to give, Liam," Julianne said, pulling her silk dress out of his desperate grip. "Callaway Capital is being liquidated tonight to pay back your secondary investors. Your penthouse is under foreclosure. Your cars are being impounded."

She stood tall, looking down at the broken man who had thought he was the master of the universe.

"Marshal," Julianne said clearly, "please remove this individual from the building. He is trespassing on property owned by my family."

Marshal Bradley hauled Liam to his feet and dragged the sobbing, broken hedge fund manager through the ballroom doors, leaving behind a silence so heavy you could hear the rain outside.
