Chapter 3 - The Dinner with the Wolf

The Vance mansion on Fifth Avenue was an architectural fortress hidden behind towering limestone walls and wrought-iron gates across from Central Park.

Inside the private formal dining room, three chandeliers of antique Baccarat crystal cast a warm, golden glow over a twenty-seat dining table set with sterling silver.

Marcus Sterling, the feared sixty-year-old patriarch of Sterling Capital, sat stiffly at the center of the table, his hands trembling slightly as he held a linen napkin.

Behind him stood his chief financial officer, sweating profusely despite the cool room temperature. For forty years, Marcus had dominated New York commercial banking, but standing inside the private sanctuary of the Vance Sovereign Trust made him feel like an insect before a storm.

The double mahogany doors swung open, and Arthur entered, flanking Julianne.

She wore a tailored midnight-blue velvet pantsuit, her dark hair swept up in an elegant chignon, radiating an aura of untouchable authority.

Marcus Sterling jumped to his feet immediately, knocking his heavy silver chair backward onto the Persian rug.

"Miss Vance," Marcus gasped, bowing his head with deep, nervous deference. "It is... it is an absolute honor. In forty years on the Street, nobody has ever met the sole beneficiary of the Sovereign Trust."

Julianne took her seat at the head of the table, waving a dismissive hand toward the opposing chairs. "Sit down, Marcus. We have business to discuss, and my time is exceptionally expensive."

Marcus sat down hurriedly, swallowing hard as Arthur poured vintage Bordeaux into their crystal glasses.

"I received your firm's prospectus for the maritime logistics syndicate," Julianne began, resting her chin on her steepled fingers. "Six hundred million dollars is a substantial ask for a bank with Sterling Capital’s recent commercial real estate exposure."

Marcus went pale, knowing that if the Vance Trust rejected the proposal, his bank’s credit rating would collapse by morning.

"Miss Vance, I assure you, our fundamentals are pristine," Marcus pleaded, his voice cracking with anxiety. "We have secured strategic partnerships, and my future son-in-law, Liam Callaway, is bringing extraordinary quantitative momentum to the fund—"

Julianne raised a single manicured eyebrow, and Marcus choked on his words, instantly falling dead silent.

"Liam Callaway," Julianne repeated softly, savoring the syllables like fine wine. "Tell me about him, Marcus. Your daughter Victoria seems quite taken with his charms."

Marcus leaned forward, sensing an opportunity to sell the relationship. "Liam is sharp, ruthless, and ambitious. He divorced his previous wife just yesterday—a sweet girl, apparently, but utterly beneath his station. Liam needed someone from our tier to solidify his standing. He believes Victoria is his gateway to the top."

Julianne picked up her wine glass, taking a slow, deliberate sip. "And what did Liam tell you about this former wife?"

"He said she was a destitute baker's daughter from upstate," Marcus answered casually, wiping his forehead with a handkerchief. "A simple woman who panicked when her monthly allowance was reduced. He paid her fifty thousand dollars to walk away quietly without creating a public scene."

Arthur Pendelton chuckled softly from the doorway, a sound that made the hair on the back of Marcus’s neck stand up.

"Is something amusing, Mr. Pendelton?" Marcus asked, his eyes darting nervously between them.

Julianne set her glass down with a soft click against the mahogany. "Marcus, what is the legal registered name of the Vance Sovereign Trust's primary holding entity?"

Marcus blinked, confused by the sudden question. "It’s... it’s the Julianne Foundation, registered in Delaware."

"And who do you suppose Julianne is?" she asked, her voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm.

Marcus stared at her face, his gaze traveling from her sharp, aristocratic cheekbones to the antique crest ring resting on her index finger.

The blood drained from the billionaire banker’s face in a single, terrifying second. His jaw dropped slack, his fork slipping from his fingers and clattering against his porcelain plate.

"You..." Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with horror. "You were the wife."

"I was the woman who cooked his dinner while he plotted with your daughter behind my back," Julianne said coldly. "And now, Marcus, you have a choice to make before tomorrow night’s gala."
