Chapter 4 - The Ultimatum

Marcus Sterling gripped the edge of the dining table so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white.

The reality of his situation crashed over him with the force of an avalanche. His daughter had not seduced a brilliant rising star; she had enticed an arrogant fool who had just casually thrown away the most powerful woman on Earth.

"Miss Vance," Marcus choked out, his arrogance completely shattered. "I swear to you on my life, I had no knowledge of this. Victoria told me Liam was separated, that his wife was a nobody! If I had known—"

"I don't care what you knew, Marcus," Julianne interrupted, her voice slicing through his panic like a scalpel. "What matters is what you do tomorrow evening at the Plaza."

"Anything," Marcus answered immediately, leaning forward with desperate compliance. "Whatever you want, Miss Vance. I will cancel the engagement party right now. I’ll call the security guards to throw Liam onto Fifth Avenue!"

"No," Julianne commanded, her eyes glittering with cold amusement. "Canceling it now is too quiet. Men like Liam need to climb all the way to the top of the mountain before the ground vanishes beneath their feet."

Arthur stepped forward and placed a two-page document before Marcus on the table.

"This is an agreement of full transfer," Arthur explained. "Tomorrow night, you will publicly endorse Liam Callaway’s Alpha Fund on stage, as planned. You will announce the six-hundred-million-dollar maritime partnership."

Marcus looked completely bewildered, staring at the contract. "I... I endorse him? But why?"

"Because," Julianne said, leaning forward into the warm chandelier light, "at 10:15 PM, the Vance Sovereign Trust will exercise its acceleration clause on Callaway Capital’s forty-five-million-dollar debt."

Marcus gasped as the brilliance of the trap dawned on him.

"When a hedge fund defaults on prime broker debt while under a public syndication pledge," Marcus murmured, his banker's mind calculating the disaster, "the SEC halts trading automatically. The fund collapses, and the general partner becomes personally liable for every dollar of the shortfall."

"Liam signed personal guarantees on that credit facility," Julianne stated with a razor-thin smile. "He thought the LLC protected his personal bank accounts. He didn't read the fine print in section thirty-two."

"He will be destroyed," Marcus whispered in awe. "He won't just be broke, Miss Vance. He’ll owe tens of millions in personal debt. He’ll never work in finance anywhere in the Western world."

"And your daughter Victoria?" Julianne asked, raising an eyebrow.

Marcus hesitated for half a second before his survival instincts took over completely. "Victoria will learn a very expensive lesson about character. The moment the announcement collapses, Sterling Capital will formally disavow any connection to Callaway."

"Wise choice, Marcus," Julianne said, standing up from the table. "Sign the transfer agreement. The Vance Trust will back your maritime logistics syndicate directly, provided you execute your part without a single mistake."

Marcus grabbed his gold fountain pen and signed the document with shaking hands, feeling as though he had just traded Liam Callaway’s soul for the survival of his own empire.

"Thank you, Miss Vance," Marcus breathed, wiping tears of relief from his eyes. "You have saved my family."

"I haven't saved anything yet, Marcus," Julianne replied, turning toward the private elevator. "I’ve merely pointed the cannon in the right direction. See you at the Plaza tomorrow night."
