Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Lie

Within an hour, the penthouse had transformed into a war room.

Vanessa had been escorted out under the tight guard of Adrian's private security team, confined to her Upper East Side apartment while Adrian's forensic financial team went to work. The veneer of polite high society had been ripped away, exposing the rot underneath.

I sat on the plush sofa, watching Noah peacefully sleep on the adjoining chaise lounge. The sheer emotional exhaustion of the day had finally caught up to him; he was tucked beneath a soft cashmere throw, his small chest rising and falling in rhythmic tranquility.

Adrian returned to the living room, holding two glasses of amber whiskey. He set one down on the marble coffee table in front of me and stood by the towering glass windows, staring down at the glowing arteries of Manhattan traffic below.

""Sterling broke within twenty minutes of being brought into my legal headquarters,"" Adrian said quietly, his voice heavy with fatigue and bitter self-reproach. ""He had accumulated over four million dollars in gambling debts six years ago. Vanessa's father paid off those debts in exchange for Sterling’s absolute loyalty inside my inner circle.""

I picked up the glass, the cut crystal cold against my trembling fingers. ""How did they know I was pregnant before you did?""

Adrian turned around, his eyes clouded with agonizing guilt. ""Vanessa had placed an unauthorized tracker on your publicist’s schedule. When your assistant booked an appointment at an obstetrics clinic under an alias, Vanessa had someone inside the clinic pull your medical chart. She realized that if you gave birth to my child, you would be untouchable. I was planning to propose to you, Claire.""

The whiskey in my glass trembled. I looked up, my eyes wide with shock. ""You were... what?""

""I had the ring in my desk drawer,"" Adrian admitted, a raw, ragged vulnerability bleeding through his usually stoic facade. ""I had spent three months designing it. I was going to ask you to marry me at the premiere of that psychological thriller. Vanessa knew that. She knew that once we married, her influence over me and my investment portfolio would be gone forever. So she orchestrated the smear video using stolen studio b-roll, had Sterling forge legal threats in my name, and drove you out of the city before you ever got the chance to show me that ultrasound.""

A deep, suffocating ache bloomed in the center of my chest. Six years. Six entire years stolen from us by the monstrous greed of a jealous woman and a corrupt lawyer. I had spent half a decade clipping coupons, working double shifts at local diners, and crying myself to sleep in tiny rented rooms, terrified that my son would grow up believing he wasn't wanted.

""I looked for you, Claire,"" Adrian whispered, walking across the room and kneeling beside my chair, just as he had knelt before Noah earlier that day. ""When you didn't show up to our dinner reservation, I tore this city apart. But Sterling fed me forged flight manifests showing you had relocated to Paris. He brought me fake social media accounts showing you living lavishly with an Italian producer. I thought you had played me. I let my pride, my stupid, arrogant pride, poison my memory of you.""

He reached out, his large, calloused hand hovering hesitatingly above mine before gently covering my fingers. His skin was warm, sending a familiar, electric jolt straight to my heart.

""Can you ever forgive me?"" he asked, his voice cracking. ""For being blind? For failing to protect you and our son when you needed me most?""

Looking down at his bowed head, seeing the absolute devastation in a man who had brought multinational corporations to their knees, the icy wall around my heart began to fracture. He hadn't abandoned me. He had been just as blind, just as manipulated, and just as deeply wounded by the conspiracy that had torn our lives apart.

""We lost six years, Adrian,"" I whispered, a tear escaping my eye and splashing onto the back of his hand. ""Six years of Noah’s first steps, his first words, his first laughs. You can't buy that time back with all the billions in your bank accounts.""

""I know,"" Adrian said, looking up into my eyes with an intensity that burned away the darkness. ""I can't change yesterday. But I swear on my life, Claire... I will spend every single second of tomorrow making it right. Starting with completely clearing your name before this night is over.""
