Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The silence that descended upon the penthouse was sharp enough to cut glass.
Vanessa stood frozen near the elevator entrance, her designer leather handbag dangling loosely from her wrist. Her perfectly powdered complexion went completely pale, stripping away the glamorous aura of the A-list movie star. She looked between me and Adrian, her polished composure cracking under the sheer impossibility of the scene.
""What... what is she doing here?"" Vanessa stammered, attempting to recover her trademark sultry voice, though a high-pitched tremor betrayed her terror. ""Adrian, why is Claire Bennett in your home? After what happened on that reality show set today... the rumors on Twitter are completely insane! People are saying—""
""People are saying what, Vanessa?"" Adrian interrupted, his voice dropping into a register of lethal quietness that made the hairs on my arms stand up. He slowly released his grip on my shoulders and turned to face her, stepping forward with deliberate, measured strides. ""Are they saying that my son was found living in obscurity because someone orchestrated a systematic destruction of his mother’s life?""
Vanessa flinched violently. Her eyes darted across the expansive marble floor, suddenly spotting Noah, who was still standing by the brass telescope, watching the scene with wide, observant eyes.
""Son?"" Vanessa breathed, her voice barely an audible squeak. She forced a hollow, nervous laugh that rattled in her throat. ""Adrian, you can't be serious. That little boy from the viral video? You honestly believe her? Claire was desperate when she left New York! She was an opportunist who couldn't handle the competition. She probably got pregnant by some random nobody and timed this entire media stunt to extort you for millions! You know how these failed starlets operate!""
""Careful, Vanessa,"" I said, my voice cold and lethal as I stepped up beside Adrian. The timid, terrified twenty-three-year-old girl who had fled Manhattan in the dead of night was gone forever. Being Noah's mother had forged steel in my bones. ""You might want to think twice before you insult my child in front of his father.""
Vanessa’s eyes flared with venomous hatred, shedding the delicate victim persona she had worn for years. ""You shouldn't even be in this city, Claire. You were warned. You signed the agreement.""
""I never signed anything,"" I retorted, taking a step toward her. ""Your pet lawyer, Thomas Sterling, brought a contract to my door with Adrian’s forged authorization. He threatened to destroy my life if I didn't disappear. And you... you took every single role that was meant for me. You took the cosmetics campaign. You took the psychological thriller. You fed on the carcass of my career like a scavenger!""
""Adrian, she's delusional!"" Vanessa turned frantically toward Adrian, reaching out to touch his lapel with manicured nails, but he stepped back, evading her touch as if she were carrying the plague. ""You know me! We've known each other since we were children! Thomas Sterling was only trying to protect your public image from an unhinged woman who wanted to trap you with a child! I would never—""
""I never told Sterling she was pregnant,"" Adrian interrupted, his words dropping like lead weights onto the marble floor.
Vanessa stopped dead. Her mouth hung open slightly, her hand frozen mid-air.
""Claire never told me she was pregnant,"" Adrian repeated, his voice terrifyingly calm, vibrating with suppressed fury. ""I didn't know about Noah until ninety minutes ago when I watched that flea market video on repeat. So tell me, Vanessa... if I didn't know Claire was carrying my child, how on earth did Thomas Sterling know to threaten her about an unborn baby six years ago?""
The air seemed to leave the room entirely. Vanessa’s throat bobbed as she tried to swallow, but no sound came out. The trap had snapped shut around her ankle, constructed entirely from her own slip of the tongue.
""I... I meant..."" Vanessa stammered, backing toward the elevator doors, her eyes darting frantically toward the hallway. ""I just assumed... rumors... Sterling mentioned—""
Before she could finish her pathetic excuse, the private elevator chimed once more. The doors parted, and Dr. Vance stepped out, holding a thick manila folder stamped with the red seal of St. Jude's Diagnostic Genetics Laboratory.
""Mr. Blackwood,"" Dr. Vance announced, his professional tone cutting cleanly through the toxic atmosphere. ""The comparative analysis is complete. The probability of paternity between you and Noah Bennett is ninety-nine point nine-nine percent. There is zero margin of error. He is your biological son.""
Adrian didn't even look at the folder. His burning, unforgiving eyes remained locked onto Vanessa's trembling face.
""Marcus,"" Adrian called out softly.

From the shadow of the foyer, his chief of security stepped forward. ""Sir?""
""Detain Thomas Sterling immediately. Freeze every corporate asset tied to the Cole family trust. And contact the District Attorney’s office. We have six years of fraud, extortion, and criminal conspiracy to dissect.""
