Chapter 10 - Where the Horizon Begins

One year later.

The sun was setting over the private coast of the Hamptons, painting the sky in breathtaking brushstrokes of violent violet, molten gold, and soft blush pink. The gentle rhythm of the Atlantic waves crashed against the pristine white sand, sending cool seafoam tumbling over the shore.

From the wrap-around wooden deck of our seaside home, the joyful sound of laughter drifted through the warm summer breeze.

""Faster, Dad! You can't catch me!""

Six-year-old Noah was sprinting across the damp sand, his bare feet kicking up sprays of ocean water. He was wearing navy swim trunks, his tanned skin glowing with health and vitality. Chasing closely behind him was Adrian, completely barefoot, his linen shirt unbuttoned at the collar, laughing with an unrestrained, childlike joy that the ruthless corporate raider of Wall Street would have once considered impossible.

Adrian lunged forward with a playful roar, scooping Noah up into his arms and spinning him around in the air while Noah squealed with delighted laughter.

""Got you, little negotiator!"" Adrian laughed, burying his face in Noah's neck, blowing raspberries that made the boy squirm with giggles. ""What's my ransom for releasing the prisoner?""

""Two extra bedtime stories and a chocolate ice cream!"" Noah declared proudly, arms wrapped tightly around his father's neck.

""Deal,"" Adrian agreed without hesitation, carrying Noah toward the deck where I sat.

I looked down at the script resting on my lap—the shooting draft of The Phoenix. Filming had wrapped two months ago, and the early test screenings were already generating thunderous Oscar buzz. But as I watched my family walking toward me across the golden sand, Hollywood felt ten thousand miles away. The glitz, the awards, the fame... they were lovely decorations, but they were no longer the foundation of my life.

My real life was walking up the wooden steps right now.

""Mommy! Dad gave me chocolate ice cream for dinner!"" Noah announced proudly as Adrian set him down on the deck.

""He did, did he?"" I raised an eyebrow, shooting Adrian an amused, scolding look. ""I remember a house rule that said vegetables come before dessert.""

Adrian held up his hands defensively, an irresistible, roguish smirk spreading across his handsome face. ""Hey, he out-negotiated me, Claire. The kid is a financial savant. I couldn't break the contract.""

""Go inside and wash your hands, you little rascal,"" I said, kissing Noah’s sandy forehead. ""The chef has vanilla and chocolate waiting in the kitchen.""

""Yes, Mommy!"" Noah cheered, bounding through the sliding glass doors like an energetic puppy, his footsteps echoing happily down the hallway.

When the door clicked shut, leaving the two of us alone under the twilight sky, Adrian stepped behind my lounge chair. His warm, strong hands rested gently on my shoulders, kneading away the faint tension of the day with practiced tenderness.

""How is the final cut looking?"" he asked softly, resting his chin lightly on the crown of my head.

""It's beautiful, Adrian,"" I replied, leaning back against his chest, closing my eyes and breathing in his familiar scent of cedar, sea salt, and rain. ""It feels honest. It feels real.""

""Just like you,"" he murmured.

Adrian walked around the chair, stepping in front of me, and slowly knelt down on one knee in the soft sand blowing across the lower deck.

My breath caught in my throat. My heart skipped a sudden, violent beat.

From the pocket of his linen trousers, Adrian pulled out a small, worn velvet box. He flipped it open with a soft click. Resting inside, illuminated by the dying embers of the sunset, was a stunning, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring, surrounded by a halo of brilliant sapphires.

""Six years ago, this ring was sitting in my desk drawer,"" Adrian said, his voice deep, steady, and vibrating with an emotion so profound it brought tears rushing to my eyes. ""I bought it because I loved you. But I was foolish back then. I thought love was about possession, about building an empire and placing you at the top of it. I didn't know what real strength was until I saw what you did for our son. You endured exile, poverty, and isolation, and you raised the most incredible boy in the world entirely on your own.""

He reached out, taking my left hand into his. His fingers were warm, steady, and full of an unwavering promise.

""I don't just love you, Claire Bennett. I respect you. I admire you. And I want to spend every sunrise and every sunset proving that you and Noah are the only empire I will ever care about."" A tear tracked down his cheek, catching the golden light. ""Will you marry me, Claire? Will you finally let me be your partner, in this life and the next?""

Looking down at the man who had torn down his own world just to rebuild mine, the last lingering shadow of the past evaporated into the cool ocean air.

""Yes,"" I whispered, my voice thick with tears of pure, unadulterated happiness. ""Yes, Adrian. A thousand times, yes.""

Adrian slid the diamond onto my finger, where it settled with a perfect, comfortable warmth. He stood up, pulling me out of the chair and into his arms, lifting me off my feet as his lips found mine. The kiss was deep, passionate, and filled with the sweet, hard-won redemption of two souls who had fought through hell to find their way home.

From the kitchen window, Noah tapped on the glass, holding up two spoons and grinning ear to ear.

May you like

Adrian broke the kiss, laughing softly against my lips as he rested his forehead against mine.

""Come on, future Mrs. Blackwood,"" Adrian smiled, his storm-grey eyes shining brighter than all the stars beginning to prick the night sky. ""We have ice cream to eat, and a lifetime of bedtime stories to tell."""
