Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage of Manhattan

The sleek black Maybach glided through the streets of Manhattan with the silent, predatory grace of a phantom. Inside the plush leather interior, the tension was so thick it was nearly impossible to breathe. Noah was sitting between us, his nose pressed firmly against the tinted window, mesmerized by the towering glass skyscrapers that he had only ever seen in picture books. We had spent the last five years in a quiet, sleepy suburb in Ohio; to him, Manhattan looked like an alien kingdom.

""Look, Mommy! That building touches the clouds!"" Noah pointed toward the Empire State Building, his dark eyes sparkling.

""It does, sweetheart,"" I murmured softly, brushing a stray lock of dark hair from his forehead. It was the exact shade and texture of Adrian's hair. I felt Adrian’s gaze burning into the side of my face, studying the gentle motion of my hand, absorbing every tiny interaction between mother and son with an obsessive, ravenous intensity.

""He's observant,"" Adrian noted quietly, his voice surprisingly gentle so as not to startle the boy. ""The viral clip... where he traded those toys. He didn't just ask for what he wanted; he analyzed what the other children lacked and exploited the leverage. A five-year-old shouldn't know how to negotiate like an arbitrage trader.""

""He’s smart,"" I replied coolly, keeping my eyes fixed on Noah. ""He gets that from me.""

""He gets his stubbornness from you,"" Adrian countered without missing a beat, a faint, nostalgic smirk ghosting across his chiseled lips. ""The analytical detachment, though... that is pure Blackwood lineage. You couldn't hide it even if you bleached his hair.""

""I wasn't trying to hide his lineage, Adrian. I was trying to protect his life. A life you made entirely uninhabitable for me.""

The car slowed to a halt in the private underground garage beneath the Blackwood Tower—a monolithic seventy-story glass spire overlooking Central Park. Two armed security guards immediately held open the doors.

Within minutes, we were whisked up a private, high-speed elevator directly to the penthouse suite. The elevator opened into an expansive, modern living space spanning thousands of square feet, floored in polished white marble and wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass windows that offered a panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline.

Waiting in the center of the room was a distinguished-looking man with silver hair, dressed in a sharp white lab coat, holding a silver medical briefcase.

""Claire, this is Dr. Vance,"" Adrian said, stepping out of the elevator. ""He’s been my family's personal physician for twenty-five years.""

""This is completely unnecessary,"" I whispered, holding Noah tightly against my hip. ""You know he’s yours. Look at him, Adrian! You don't need a medical test to know.""

""I need legal certainty,"" Adrian replied, his voice firm but devoid of malice. ""Not because I doubt my own eyes, Claire, but because the vultures who surround my empire will demand proof the moment I acknowledge him as my heir. I will not have his legitimacy questioned by the board of directors, the press, or my family. He will be bulletproof.""

Dr. Vance knelt down with a gentle, grandfatherly smile, opening a sterile cotton swab. ""Hello there, young man. I just need to brush the inside of your cheek with this little cotton stick. It doesn't hurt at all. Think you can open wide like a lion for me?""

Noah looked at the swab, then up at Adrian with that piercing, uncanny gaze. ""If I do this, do I get to play with that giant telescope by the window?""

Adrian actually blinked in surprise, before a genuine, deep laugh rumbled from his chest—a sound I hadn't heard in what felt like a lifetime. ""Deal. You can look through the telescope as long as you want.""

Noah opened his mouth wide without a single complaint. Dr. Vance swabbed his inner cheek with expert swiftness, sealed the sample into a tamper-proof vial, and then turned to Adrian to repeat the procedure.

""Results will take roughly three hours on our rapid sequencer, Mr. Blackwood,"" Dr. Vance said, packing his case and bowing respectfully before heading back toward the private elevator.

As the elevator doors slid shut, the vast penthouse fell into an uneasy silence once more. Noah immediately scampered across the marble floor toward the brass telescope positioned by the sweeping panoramic window, completely captivated by the sprawling city below.

Adrian stood watching our son for a long, quiet moment, his expression unreadable. Then, he turned to face me, his storm-grey eyes darkening with a deadly seriousness.

""Now,"" Adrian said, unbuttoning his suit jacket and tossing it onto an armchair. ""Tell me everything about the smear campaign, the threats, and why you believe I was the one who pulled the trigger on your career.""
