Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Spotlight

I stood near the grand piano, keeping a clear line of sight to Noah as he fiddled with the knobs on the brass telescope. Crossing my arms tightly against the sudden chill that seemed to radiate from the white marble, I stared at Adrian with all the pent-up fury that had been festering inside me for six agonizing years.

""Don't play the innocent victim, Adrian. It insults both of our intelligence,"" I began, my voice trembling with raw, resurfaced pain. ""Six years ago, I was signed as the lead in Marcus Vance's new psychological thriller. I had a three-year cosmetic contract waiting for my signature. I was finally making it. And then, in the span of seventy-two hours, everything evaporated into thin air.""

Adrian leaned against the back of a leather sofa, his expression tightening. ""I remember the thriller. I was one of the executive producers backing the production. What happened to it?""

""What happened?"" I laughed bitterly, the sound echoing hollowly against the high ceiling. ""A leaked behind-the-scenes video hit the internet. It showed me throwing a hot cup of coffee at a production assistant and screaming that the crew was incompetent. By midnight, it was trending everywhere. The comments were calling me a violent narcissist, a spoiled monster, an untouchable hazard. Brands terminated their deals within hours. The studio recast my role before I could even issue a public statement.""

""And who did they recast the role with?"" Adrian asked, his voice dangerously low.

""Vanessa Cole,"" I snapped, spitting her name like poison. ""Your darling childhood friend. The woman whose career magically skyrocketed the exact second mine was obliterated! And when my publicist tried to release the raw, unedited footage—which proved that the assistant had accidentally tripped and spilled the coffee on me, and that the audio had been spliced from a table read—every major media outlet refused to air it. My publicist told me directly: 'Adrian Blackwood’s legal representatives warned us that if we fight back, they will bury us in defamation lawsuits until we go bankrupt.'""

Adrian’s face drained of color. He stood up straight, his hands clenching into tight, white-knuckled fists at his sides. ""I never issued a single legal warning to your team, Claire. Not one.""

""Then why did your chief legal counsel, Thomas Sterling, show up at my apartment two days later?"" I demanded, my voice rising as the terrifying memory flashed behind my eyes. ""He stood on my doorstep with a nondisclosure agreement and an envelope full of cash! He told me that you wanted me completely out of the industry, that you were backing Vanessa exclusively, and that if I ever tried to contact you again, you would ensure I never worked a day in my life! I was twenty-three years old, Adrian! I was pregnant, alone, terrified, and being hunted by your billion-dollar legal machine!""

Tears were stinging the corners of my eyes now, burning with the memory of the sheer helplessness that had crushed me back then. I remembered packing my two suitcases in the dead of night, sleeping in cheap motels, terrified that every black town car that passed was filled with Adrian’s private investigators coming to finish the job.

""Thomas Sterling..."" Adrian whispered, the name dropping from his mouth like acid. His jaw clenched so hard I could hear his teeth grind. ""Sterling has been on the Cole family’s payroll for a decade. He handled Vanessa’s trust funds before he ever worked for Blackwood Enterprises.""

I froze, staring at him in disbelief. ""What?""

""Six years ago, Vanessa came to my office sobbing,"" Adrian explained, his eyes fixed on mine with an intensity that demanded belief. ""She told me that her father had embezzled millions from her trust, leaving her destitute. She told me she was being blackmailed by an abusive ex-partner who was threatening to ruin her career if she didn't hand over her remaining assets. When you overheard me saying 'You've been wronged for long enough,' I wasn't talking about choosing her over you, Claire! I was talking about her family's betrayal! I agreed to help her secure acting contracts to help her get back on her feet because I felt pity for her.""

My breath hitched in my throat. The room seemed to tilt beneath my feet. ""No... that can't be. You... you didn't order the smear campaign?""

""I didn't even know about the coffee video until weeks later, after you had already vanished!"" Adrian took two long strides toward me, grabbing my shoulders with hands that were surprisingly gentle despite his fury. ""I thought you left because you realized you didn't love me. I thought you walked out because you couldn't handle the pressure of my world! When I tried to find you, Sterling told me you had taken a settlement and moved to Europe to start a new life with someone else!""

We stood there, suspended in a horrifying vortex of truth. The web of deceit had been so intricate, so flawlessly orchestrated, that we had spent six years hating each other across a chasm built entirely out of lies.

Before either of us could say another word, the heavy double doors of the private elevator chimed.

The doors slid open, and a woman stepped into the penthouse suite unannounced, draped in an elegant designer trench coat, her blonde hair falling in perfect, styled waves around her shoulders.

""Adrian, darling,"" Vanessa Cole purred, her voice sweet as honey before her eyes landed on me. The smile vanished from her face instantly, replaced by a mask of sheer, frozen horror. ""Claire...?""
