Chapter 9 - Confronting the Skeptic

By Sunday morning, news of the miracle recovery had spread through the hospital, but back on Route 9, the world kept turning. The snow had stopped, leaving behind a crisp, sunny morning where the pines glittered with fresh frost.
Inside the coffee stand, Kurt was tapping his foot impatiently by the register. He had spent the last two days complaining about Rosemary's sudden absence on Friday and the general lack of discipline among his staff.
""I'm telling you, Ro,"" Kurt grumbled as he restocked the plastic lids, ""you got emotionally involved with a crazy situation. Kids who hang around parking lots stalking nurses don't turn out to be angels. It's a miracle the guy didn't rob her.""
Rosemary didn't say a word. She just smiled serenely and checked the digital drive-thru camera.
At precisely 5:15 a.m., the familiar chime echoed through the booth.
A car had just pulled up to the speaker.
""Delgado's Coffee, what can I get started for you?"" Rosemary spoke into her headset, her voice laced with unmistakable warmth.
""Hi, Ro,"" a soft, familiar voice replied through the speaker. ""We'd like a large black coffee with two sugars, a hot chocolate with extra whipped cream, and... two small vanilla lattes, please.""
Kurt frowned, looking at the security monitor. ""Wait. That's the nurse's car. But there's someone in the passenger seat.""
A moment later, the silver Corolla pulled smoothly up to the pickup window. Evelyn rolled down the glass, smiling brightly. But it wasn't Evelyn who caught Kurt's attention.
Sitting in the passenger seat, wearing an oversized winter jacket over a hospital wristband, with a neat white surgical dressing taped securely over his temple, was the seventeen-year-old boy from the rusty green Honda.
Kurt froze, the stack of coffee lids slipping from his fingers and scattering across the linoleum floor. ""You..."" he stammered, pointing an accusatory finger. ""You're the stalker kid!""
Lucas didn't flinch. He looked at Kurt through the open window, his gray eyes calm, clear, and completely devoid of malice. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a crisp ten-dollar bill, and laid it gently on the stainless steel counter.
""Good morning, Kurt,"" Lucas said politely with a gentle grin. ""Keep the change.""
""He's not a stalker, Kurt,"" Evelyn said, her voice ringing with pride and authority. ""This is Lucas Miller. He is my nephew. And as of yesterday afternoon, I am officially his legal guardian.""
Kurt's jaw dropped. He looked from Lucas to Evelyn, noticing for the first time the unmistakable resemblance around their eyes and the gentle tilt of their smiles. The cynical manager looked down at the ten-dollar bill on the counter, his face turning bright crimson. He swallowed hard, completely at a loss for words, before quietly turning around and retreating into the back storage room without uttering another syllable.
Rosemary burst into hearty laughter, handing the tray of steaming drinks through the window. ""I believe this belongs to you two,"" she winked.
Evelyn took the tray, handing the hot chocolate to Lucas, who took a slow, appreciative sip.
""How's the head feeling, kiddo?"" Rosemary asked, leaning on the counter with genuine affection.
""Better than ever, Ro,"" Lucas smiled, leaning back against the passenger headrest. ""Best hot chocolate in Maine.""

""You two drive safe,"" Rosemary said, tapping the car door affectionately. ""I'll see you tomorrow morning.""
""Every morning, Ro,"" Evelyn promised with a radiant smile. ""From now on, every single morning.""
