Chapter 8 - The Awakening

Evelyn buried her face in the coarse fabric of the letter and sobbed until her throat burned.

He hadn't been stalking her out of vengeance. He had been guarding her out of love. A broken, orphaned boy who had discovered the darkest truth about his family, yet chose compassion over hatred, forgiveness over retribution. For 412 mornings, while she fought to save strangers' lives in the hospital, her own flesh and blood had been quietly protecting her soul from across the street.

""We have to get back,"" Rosemary said gently, wiping a tear from her own wrinkled cheek and placing a comforting hand on Evelyn's shoulder. ""He's going to wake up, Evelyn. And when he does, he needs his aunt.""

They raced back across the bridge to Eastern Maine Medical Center. The clock on the dashboard read 1:45 p.m. Nearly five hours had passed since Lucas was wheeled into the operating theater.

When they stepped out onto the surgical floor, Dr. Vance was walking out of the scrub room, untying his blue surgical mask. His face looked drained, but the heavy tension in his jaw had eased.

""Marcus!"" Evelyn called out, running down the hallway. ""How is he?""

Dr. Vance looked up, surprised to see Rosemary standing beside her, but he offered a faint, reassuring smile. ""We successfully evacuated the epidural hematoma. The pressure dropped immediately. We didn't have to remove a bone flap. The swelling is receding much faster than expected.""

""Can he breathe on his own?"" Evelyn asked, holding her breath.

""We extubated him twenty minutes ago in recovery,"" Dr. Vance said. ""He's tough, Evelyn. Unbelievably tough. He's weak, disoriented, and in a lot of pain, but he's conscious. He's asking for someone.""

""Who?""

""He keeps asking about a silver car,"" the doctor smiled softly. ""He asked the recovery nurse if the lady in the Corolla got her coffee today.""

Fresh tears sprang to Evelyn's eyes, but this time, they were tears of overwhelming gratitude. ""Can I see him?""

""Go on in,"" Dr. Vance said, stepping aside. ""He's officially in post-op bed two.""

Evelyn turned to Rosemary. ""Come with me, Ro. You're part of this too.""

Together, they pushed open the door to the recovery room. Lucas was lying propped up against two large white pillows. His head was wrapped in a thick white gauze bandage, and his face was pale, but his striking gray eyes were open—clear, alert, and deeply focused on the door.

When he saw Evelyn walk in, a faint, timid look of panic crossed his features, as if he expected her to run away or accuse him.

Evelyn didn't hesitate. She crossed the room in two strides, dropped to her knees beside his bed, and gently wrapped her arms around his uninjured shoulder, pulling him close.

""Lucas,"" she whispered against his hair. ""I know everything. I read the letter. I'm so sorry. I'm so, so sorry for what Richard did.""

The boy froze for a second. Then, a ragged sob escaped his chest. His uninjured arm came up and wrapped around her neck, burying his face into her shoulder. ""I'm sorry, Aunt Evelyn,"" he wept, sounding like the terrified little boy he had been forced to hide for fourteen years. ""I didn't know how to tell you.""

""You don't ever have to say you're sorry,"" she whispered fiercely. ""You're safe now. You're home.""
