Chapter 10 - Morning 413

Three months later, the Maine spring had finally arrived, melting away the dirty snowbanks and replacing them with lush green grass and blooming wild lupines along the shoulders of Route 9.

The bell above the coffee stand chimed as Rosemary wiped down the espresso machine. Outside, the sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of gold, pink, and violet.

A brand-new sign hung neatly above the drive-thru window, paid for by the coffee shop's regional owners who had heard the story after it went viral on local news: “Delgado’s: Where Community Means Family.”

At 5:14 a.m., a familiar hum echoed down the highway.

It wasn't a rusty green Honda anymore. Lucas's beat-up Civic had been totaled in the accident, but with the help of his aunt and his savings from the auto repair shop, he was now driving a reliable, certified pre-owned blue Subaru.

The Subaru pulled into the drive-thru lane. Sitting in the driver’s seat was Lucas, looking healthy, vibrant, and sporting a full head of hair that completely covered his faint surgical scar. He rolled down the window and beamed at Rosemary.

""Morning, Ro!"" he called out cheerfully.

""Morning, stranger,"" Rosemary grinned. ""You're running thirty seconds early today.""

""Got a big day ahead,"" Lucas said proudly, adjusting his varsity jacket. ""High school graduation rehearsal at eight, and then Aunt Evelyn and I are heading down to Portland to tour the automotive engineering campus.""

""Look at you, all grown up,"" Rosemary smiled, her heart swelling with maternal joy. ""What can I get for you, handsome?""

""Just a small hot chocolate for me,"" Lucas said. Then, right on cue, he glanced into his rearview mirror.

Pulling up directly behind him was the familiar silver Corolla. Evelyn was sitting behind the wheel, tapping her fingers along to the radio, looking well-rested, radiant, and peaceful. She saw Lucas looking in his mirror and gave him a playful wave.

Lucas turned back to Rosemary, a wide, genuine grin spreading across his face as he placed a five-dollar bill on the ledge.

""And whatever the car behind me gets,"" he said softly, using the exact same words he had spoken 412 times before. ""I'll pay for it.""

Rosemary didn't take the bill. Instead, she pushed it gently back toward him.

""Not today, Lucas,"" she said, nodding toward the car behind him.

Lucas turned around. Evelyn had just rolled down her window and was leaning out, laughing.

""Hey, kid!"" Evelyn called out over the idling engines, holding up her own credit card through her open window. ""Save your money for college tuition! This morning is number 413—and your aunt is paying!""

Lucas laughed, shaking his head as he pocketed the bill. The burden that had weighed on his chest for fourteen lonely years was completely gone, replaced by the warmth of a family that had been found in the most unlikely place on earth.

He pulled forward into the parking lot, parked his car in the sun, and waited for his aunt so they could sit on the bench together, drinking their morning coffee as the dawn broke over Route 9."
