Chapter 2 - The Boy in Bed Four

The smell of antiseptic and rubbing alcohol hit Evelyn like a physical blow as she stepped out of the elevator onto the third floor. Usually, she turned right toward the post-op recovery ward where she had spent the last nine years tending to hip replacements and gallbladder surgeries. But this morning, her feet carried her left, down the hushed, carpeted corridor of the intensive care unit.

The cardiac monitors hummed their steady, rhythmic song. Behind the glass wall of room 404, bathed in the pale, sterile glow of blue monitors, lay the boy.

Evelyn paused at the threshold, her hand pressed against the cool glass. Up close, without the warm morning light of the drive-thru, he looked horrifyingly fragile. A tangle of IV lines snaked into the back of his bruised hands. A mechanical ventilator rose and fell with a rhythmic, mechanical hiss, forcing oxygen into his battered lungs. Swelling distorted the left side of his jaw, and a white bandage was taped securely over his temple. Yet, beneath the medical hardware and the deep purple bruises, the face from Rosemary's photo was undeniable.

""You're not assigned to this pod, Evelyn,"" a voice said softly behind her.

She jumped slightly, turning to see Dr. Marcus Vance, the chief trauma surgeon, holding an iPad and looking at her with tired, assessing eyes. Evelyn adjusted her lanyard, swallowing the lump in her throat. ""I know, Marcus. I just... I think I might know him. Or rather, he knows me. Who brought him in? Is his family here?""

Dr. Vance sighed, running a hand through his graying hair. ""State police found his green Civic wrapped around an oak tree off Route 9 near the bog. He must have hit a patch of black ice at fifty miles an hour. He was pinned in the wreckage for nearly forty minutes before a snowplow driver spotted his taillights down the embankment.""

""Has anyone called his parents?"" Evelyn asked, her voice cracking. ""A mother? A father? Anyone?""

""That's the problem,"" Marcus replied grimly. ""There's no emergency contact listed in his phone—it was crushed on impact. His registration comes back to a small rental cottage on the outskirts of Brewer. We found a student ID card in his wallet, but no local guardian is on record. The kid is technically seventeen, turning eighteen next week, but according to the school district, he's classified as an emancipated unaccompanied minor. He lives completely alone.""

Evelyn felt the breath rush out of her lungs. ""Alone? A seventeen-year-old boy?""

""His name is Lucas,"" Dr. Vance said, tapping the tablet screen. ""Lucas Miller. And right now, Evelyn, Lucas is in a medically induced coma to reduce brain swelling. If that intracranial pressure doesn't come down by tonight, we may have to take him into emergency surgery. If nobody steps forward to sign medical authorizations, he becomes a ward of the state.""

Evelyn looked back through the glass at Lucas. Lucas Miller. The name echoed in her head, but it didn't trigger any immediate recognition. Yet, looking at the sharp contour of his cheekbones and the dark wave of his hair, that haunting sense of familiarity returned, stronger than before. For 412 mornings, this boy had stood sentinel over her life, spending his hard-earned cash to ensure she started her grueling shifts with a warm cup of coffee and a moment of peace.

Why her? Why would an abandoned, lonely teenager wake up before dawn just to buy coffee for a tired middle-aged nurse he claimed not to know?

""Marcus,"" Evelyn said, her voice trembling with sudden resolve. ""Can I sit with him for a few minutes before my shift starts?""

The surgeon looked at her for a long moment, seeing the fierce, maternal desperation in her eyes. He nodded gently. ""Ten minutes, Evelyn. Talk to him. Sometimes, when they're this deep under, a familiar voice is the only thing that pulls them back from the edge.""
