Chapter 28 - Whispers of New Life

Spring returned to Chicago, painting the parks in vibrant green and filling the air with the crisp sweetness of blooming cherry blossoms along Lincoln Park Lagoon. The loft on West Belmont was alive with music, the rich aroma of espresso, and the comfortable rhythm of an ordinary, loving household. One Sunday morning, as sunlight bathed the kitchen tiles, Nina stood by the open balcony doors, feeling an overwhelming wave of serene wonder stirring within her body.

After running a private series of clinical tests that morning, she carried a small wrapped box out onto the sunny terrace where Luca was repotting hydrangeas. She wrapped her arms around his waist from behind, resting her cheek against the broad muscles of his back. Luca paused his work, rinsing the soil from his hands, and turned with that gentle, devastatingly handsome smile that transformed his scarred face. “Good morning, beautiful. You look radiant today.”

Nina smiled, taking his large, calloused fingers and pressing the small velvet box into his palms. Luca opened the lid to find a miniature pair of baby knitted booties and a clear medical readout showing an unmistakable positive result. Luca stood frozen, his eyes widening in profound astonishment as his breath hitched in his throat. Tears welled up in his eyes—tears of sheer, unadulterated joy. He swept Nina into his arms, lifting her off her feet and burying his face into the crook of her neck, laughing with a boyish happiness he had never known in his youth. From the living room, Sophie bounded onto the terrace, cheering with unbridled excitement as she realized she was going to be an older sister.
