Chapter 20 - The Promise of Tomorrow

One year later.
The summer sun beamed down over the manicured lawn of a historic municipal garden estate overlooking Lake Michigan. White hydrangeas and soft blush roses lined the stone pathways, their sweet fragrance carried on a gentle, cool breeze sweeping off the blue water.
Inside the garden pavilion, Nina stood before a full-length antique mirror, adjusting the delicate lace sleeves of her vintage ivory wedding dress. Her honey-blond hair was woven into an elegant updo adorned with tiny baby’s breath blossoms, and around her wrist hung Henry Kowalski’s restored gold watch, its rhythmic ticking steady and proud against her pulse.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Tommy stepped inside, looking dashing in a tailored navy tuxedo, a wide, proud smile lighting up his face. “You look breathtaking, Nina. Truly.”
“Thank you, Tommy,” Nina smiled, smoothing the lace over her waist. “How is your uncle holding up out there?”
“Uncle Luca has checked his pocket watch fourteen times in the last eight minutes,” Tommy laughed. “Gus offered him a glass of water, and Luca told him that waiting for you was harder than taking the federal district court. He’s completely gone for you, Nina.”
Tommy stepped closer, his expression turning solemn and heartfelt. He took her hands in his. “I never got to properly thank you, Nina. Not just for pumping blood into me that night at Lakefront, but for giving my uncle his life back. You gave us all our lives back.”
“You did the hard work by building a future, Tommy,” Nina replied softly, squeezing his fingers. “Now let’s get this wedding started.”
The garden string quartet began playing the soft, resonant chords of a traditional processional.
As the pavilion doors opened, Nina stepped out onto the stone aisle. Her breath caught in her chest.
Standing at the end of the flower-draped arbor beneath the clear blue summer sky was Luca. He looked magnificent in a bespoke black tuxedo, the broad lines of his shoulders squared, but the moment his eyes locked onto hers, every ounce of stern composure melted away. Unabashed, glittering tears welled in his dark eyes, his face radiating an absolute, worshipful love that captivated every guest in attendance.
Standing beside him as maid of honor was Sophie, wearing a soft lavender dress, beaming with pride as she held the wedding bands.
Nina walked down the aisle with grace and purpose, her eyes never leaving Luca’s. Every step was a testament to survival: from the blood-spattered asphalt of Belmont Avenue to the smoke-filled catwalks of Calumet, every trial had forged the unbreakable steel of their devotion.
When she reached the altar, Luca stepped forward, extending his hand. His touch was warm, steady, and reverent as he helped her up the stone steps.
“You are my entire world,” Luca whispered, his voice trembling with emotion so intense that several nurses in the front row dabbed their eyes with handkerchiefs.
The minister’s voice rose above the gentle rustle of leaves, reciting timeless vows of fidelity, honor, and enduring love. When the moment arrived for the exchange of vows, Luca turned to face Nina, holding her hands between his.
“Nina,” Luca spoke, his deep voice carrying clearly across the garden. “I spent twenty years believing that the only way to protect what I loved was through destruction. But you showed me that true strength is found in the hands that heal, that nurture, and that forgive. You climbed into my car on the darkest night of my life, and you brought the sun with you. Today, before God, our family, and our daughter, I promise to spend every breath building a life of honor, peace, and unyielding devotion for you. My hands belong to you, forever.”
Tears streamed down Nina’s cheeks, catching the golden sunlight.
“Luca,” Nina replied, her voice ringing with clear, luminous conviction. “My father taught me that a person’s worth is measured by what their hands build. With you, I have built a home out of rubble, a family out of sorrow, and a future out of hope. You are my protector, my partner, and my heart. I promise to stand beside you in every storm, to celebrate every dawn, and to love you without fear, for all of our days.”
Sophie stepped forward, presenting the platinum bands with a radiant grin.
Luca slid the band onto Nina’s finger, and Nina mirrored the gesture, sliding a matching heavy platinum band onto his broad, scarred hand.
“By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the minister declared with a joyful smile. “Luca, you may kiss your bride.”
Luca didn't hesitate. He wrapped his arms around Nina, lifting her slightly off her feet as he brought his lips to hers in a deep, breathtaking kiss that sealed their past, their present, and their infinite tomorrows. The garden erupted into thunderous applause, cheers, and standing ovations from nurses, federal agents, and transit workers alike.

Hand in hand, Luca and Nina Kowalski-Moretti turned to walk back down the sunlit aisle together, stepping out of the shadows of the past and into the everlasting dawn of a beautiful, peaceful life.
