Chapter 9 - The Launch of the Sophia

A year to the day after the incident that nearly destroyed the family, the Newport private marina was bathed in brilliant autumn sunlight.

Crowds of well-wishers, community leaders, dock workers, and family members filled the pier. White ribbons fluttered in the sea breeze, and an orchestra played soft classical melodies near the water.

Tied to the main pier, gleaming like a polished pearl under the sun, was a brand-new, state-of-the-art 150-foot hybrid luxury yacht. Gone was the old Aurelia, which Dominic had sold and donated all proceeds to maritime safety charities. This new vessel was built with revolutionary eco-friendly engines, advanced underwater safety sonar, and open glass observation decks.

Emblazoned across the stern in elegant gold leaf was the ship's new name: The Sophia.

Seven-year-old Sophie stood on a decorated platform at the bow, wearing a beautiful navy blue sailor dress with a bright yellow sash. In her hands, she proudly held a bottle of vintage sparkling apple cider, wrapped in colorful blue ribbon.

Beside her stood Dominic and Clare. Clare wore a stunning ivory silk dress that complemented the emerald engagement ring sparkling on her finger. Dominic had proposed two weeks prior during a quiet dinner on the estate terrace, and Clare had said yes with tears of pure joy streaming down her face.

Dominic leaned down to Sophie. ""Are you ready, Captain Sophie?""

""Ready, Mr. Dominic! I mean... Dad!"" Sophie cheered, her face lighting up with boundless happiness. Hearing her call him 'Dad' still made Dominic's chest tighten with deep, protective warmth.

""Whenever you're ready, sweetheart,"" Clare said, gently kissing Sophie’s cheek.

Sophie stepped forward to the railing, cleared her throat into the microphone, and spoke with all the confidence of a seasoned sea captain: ""I christen this ship The Sophia! May she always bring good people home safely, and may bad guys always slip on crayons!""

The crowd erupted in laughter and roaring applause. Sophie swung the bottle with all her might, smashing it cleanly against the steel anchor plate. Foaming cider cascaded down the bow, followed by the blast of the ship’s deep, triumphant horn echoing across the bay.

Gavin Cross stood by the gangway, saluting smartly as Dominic led his new family up the steps.

""All clear beneath the hull, Captain?"" Dominic joked with a grin.

Gavin laughed heartily. ""Sir, we have six automated sonar sweeps, underwater cameras, and Tony did a personal dive this morning. The only thing under this boat is seawater and good fortune.""

As the family stepped onto the sunlit deck, Elena Romano approached them. She had spent the last year working quietly at the charity foundation, seeking redemption for her son Elliot’s terrible sins. She knelt before Sophie and handed her a beautifully wrapped gift.

""For our little hero,"" Elena said with genuine affection. ""Thank you for saving us all.""

Sophie unwrapped the paper to reveal an official certificate: Sophie Bennett-Romano had been named honorary junior commodore of the Rhode Island Maritime Youth Fleet.

As the engines purred to life with a gentle, whisper-quiet hum, the Sophia glided smoothly away from the dock, carving a sparkling white wake into the tranquil blue waters of Narragansett Bay.
