Chapter 3 - The Cold Mask Cracks

""Don't do it, boy,"" Dominic warned, his voice dropped to a lethal register.

Elliot pulled a compact silver pistol from his coat, waving it frantically at the surrounding guards. ""Stay back! Back off, all of you! You think you're gods just because you sit at the head of the table, Uncle Dominic? You've held the reins for thirty years! You treat me like an errand boy while you build legitimate shipping lines and leave the rest of us with crumbs!""

The armed guards instantly drew their weapons, forming a deadly firing squad aimed directly at Elliot's chest. Elena shrieked, collapsing into the arms of Dominic’s personal assistant.

""Elliot, drop the gun,"" Gavin said calmly, stepping forward despite being unarmed. ""You're surrounded. The front gates are locked by hydraulic bolts. You have nowhere to run.""

""Shut up, you washed-up bodyguard!"" Elliot yelled, his eyes wild and bloodshot with desperation. ""I was supposed to take over the Romano empire! The Moretti family offered me fifty percent of the entire New York and Boston territory if Dominic and his inner circle disappeared tonight! Everything was set! The yacht leaves, the explosion looks like an accidental engine room fuel-line rupture, and I inherit the entire holding company tomorrow morning as the sole surviving male heir!""

Dominic looked at his nephew with a mixture of cold disgust and profound disappointment. ""You would murder your own mother? Your cousins? The children on board?""

""They were collateral damage!"" Elliot screamed. ""Sacrifices have to be made to build an empire! And I would have pulled it off if it wasn't for that little rat and her stupid blue crayon!""

With a sudden burst of malice, Elliot swung his pistol toward the service doorway where Clare and Sophie were still cowering.

""Elliot, no!"" Dominic roared.

Before Elliot could pull the trigger, Sophie suddenly hurled her blunt blue crayon with all the force her tiny arm could muster. The waxy cylinder struck Elliot directly in his right eye. The sting made him blink and flinch for a split second, throwing off his aim.

A loud gunshot cracked through the marina air, the bullet embedding harmlessly into the wooden dock post inches from Dominic's shoulder.

In that fraction of a second, Gavin rushed forward like a charging bull. He slammed his full weight into Elliot, tackling him hard against the wet concrete pier. The pistol clattered across the stones, sliding directly into the dark ocean water with a faint splash.

Gavin twisted Elliot’s arm behind his back, pressing his face into the cold stone until the young man groaned in agonizing pain. Marco immediately ran over with heavy zip-ties, binding Elliot’s wrists and ankles with brutal efficiency.

Dominic stood over his nephew, looking down at him as if he were a poisonous insect.

""Take him to the basement cellar beneath the wine lodge,"" Dominic ordered in a tone stripped of all human warmth. ""Keep him alive. He will tell us every single name involved in this plot—every Moretti associate, every corrupt harbor inspector, and every dirty politician who signed off on this massacre.""

""Uncle Dominic! Please! I was manipulated! They threatened my life!"" Elliot wailed, weeping pathetic tears as Marco dragged him across the gravel toward a waiting black SUV. ""Mom! Tell him! Tell him I'm your son!""

Elena turned her back on her son, weeping into her hands in utter devastation.

Dominic turned toward Clare and Sophie. The little girl was trembling violently, her chest heaving as Clare wrapped both arms tightly around her, whispering prayers of gratitude into her hair.

Dominic walked toward them, kneeling once more before the six-year-old child who had just saved an entire dynasty. He noticed her empty, curled-up fingers.

""You threw away your favorite crayon to protect me,"" Dominic said softly, a rare, genuine smile appearing on his weathered face.

Sophie sniffled, wiping her nose with her sleeve. ""He was going to hurt you, Mr. Dominic. My mommy says when someone is bad, you have to be brave.""

Dominic looked up at Clare. The young mother looked utterly exhausted, her hands worn rough from years of scrubbing floors and cleaning toilets to keep food on their table.

""Clare,"" Dominic said, his voice carrying the absolute authority of a king. ""Tomorrow morning, you are no longer a maid in this house. Your days of cleaning up after ungrateful people are over.""

Clare looked terrified. ""Mr. Romano, please don't fire me! I don't have anywhere else to go—""

""I am not firing you, Clare,"" Dominic interrupted gently. ""I am making you the managing director of the Romano Family Foundation. And as for Sophie... she is officially under the Romano family's permanent guardianship. But first, we have a snake nest in Boston to eradicate.""
