Chapter 7 - The Shadows Strike Back

Even when a king slays a dragon, the dying beast throngs in violent spasms before it draws its last breath.

Two days after the confrontation in Little Italy, Frankie Moretti had fled to Palermo, and his brother Vincent was rounded up by federal agents. The Romano shipping empire rapidly consolidated its grip on the northern ports, transforming operations into fully legal, transparent corporate entities.

However, one piece of the puzzle remained unaccounted for: the Romanian demolitions expert who had physically placed the black box beneath the Aurelia. His name was Vladic, an ex-mercenary who lived like a ghost off-grid. With his employers either arrested or in exile, Vladic had not received his final payment of two million dollars—and he knew exactly who was responsible for ruining his score.

At the Romano estate in Newport, late afternoon shadows stretched long across the manicured lawns. Clare Bennett was in the carriage house library, going through files for the newly founded charitable trust she was now directing. For the first time in her adult life, she felt a profound sense of peace. She had a respectable salary, healthcare, a safe home, and a future for her daughter.

Through the window, she could see Sophie sitting on a white stone bench in the private rose garden, happily sketching a magnificent peacock using her vibrant new crayons. Two Romano security guards were stationed at the iron gate fifty yards away.

Suddenly, a strange thud sounded near the hedge perimeter.

Clare looked up. One of the guards was slumping to the ground, a silent dart protruding from the side of his neck. Before the second guard could react, a tall figure clad in black tactical gear vaulted the stone wall with inhuman agility, striking the remaining guard with a brutal blow that knocked him unconscious.

Clare’s blood turned to ice. ""SOPHIE!"" she shrieked, bolting toward the garden door.

The intruder—Vladic—strode toward the rose garden, his face covered by a tactical balaclava, a silenced submachine gun slung across his chest. He wasn't there to plant another bomb. He was there to take the little girl hostage to force Dominic Romano into wiring his two million dollars plus a safe passage out of the country.

Sophie heard her mother’s scream and spun around. She saw the tall, terrifying man in black running directly toward her.

Instead of freezing in terror, the six-year-old remembered Dominic's words: When bad people come, you stand your ground.

Sophie grabbed her heavy wooden box of a thousand crayons and dumped the entire contents across the smooth marble walkway right in front of the rose arbor. Hundreds of round, waxy crayons rolled frantically across the polished stone.

Vladic, sprinting full speed with his eyes fixed on the child, planted his heavy combat boot directly onto the carpet of rolling crayons. His foot slipped out from under him instantly, defying friction. The hardened mercenary lost his balance completely, his legs kicking into the air as he crashed violently backward onto the hard marble stairs.

The breath was knocked completely out of his lungs with a sickening crack, and his weapon flew from his grip, clattering across the patio.

""Mommy, run!"" Sophie yelled, scrambling behind a large marble fountain.

Vladic groaned, rolling over in agony, trying to reach for his dropped gun. But before his fingers could brush the steel, a heavy, polished leather shoe slammed down onto his wrist, pinning it to the stone with crushing force.

Vladic looked up through blurred vision.

Standing above him was Dominic Romano, holding a 12-gauge shotgun aimed squarely at the mercenary’s forehead. Flanking him were Gavin Cross and four armed guards, their weapons drawn and locked on target.

""You slipped on a crayon,"" Dominic said, his voice dripping with icy contempt. ""Twice now, a six-year-old girl has outsmarted the finest killers money could buy.""

Gavin kicked the mercenary's submachine gun away and drove his knee into Vladic's back, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

Clare burst into the garden, throwing herself onto the ground and pulling Sophie into a fierce, weeping embrace. ""Sophie! Oh God, baby, are you hurt? Did he touch you?""

""I'm okay, Mommy!"" Sophie said, breathing heavily but beaming with pride. ""I made him slip! Just like in the cartoons!""

Dominic lowered his shotgun, handing it to Marco. He knelt down beside Sophie, picking up a single rolled blue crayon that had stopped near his boot.

""Sophie Bennett,"" Dominic said, his heart swelling with admiration for the fearless little girl. ""You have officially saved my life twice. I think it's time you and your mother became real family.""
