Chapter 1 - The Shadow on the Dock

The heavy silence on the Newport private dock was broken only by the rhythmic sloshing of dark seawater against the massive white hull of the Aurelia. Gavin Cross, Dominic Romano’s head of security for twenty-two loyal years, stood frozen in place. The small radio in his palm buzzed with static, the technician’s voice still echoing in the cold ocean breeze: ""Whose credential? Gavin Cross, sir.""
Dominic did not draw a weapon. A man who had ruled the Eastern seaboard's underworld and maritime shipping empire for three decades did not flinch in panic. He stood six feet two inches tall, his slate-gray eyes boring into the man who had stood at his back during gangland turf wars, funeral processions, and multi-million-dollar board meetings.
""Explain it, Gavin,"" Dominic said. His tone was deceptively calm, a quiet whisper that struck far more terror into those who knew him than an open roar ever could.
""Boss, I swear on my mother’s soul, my keycard is in my pocket,"" Gavin insisted, his face draining of all color. He reached inside his tailored charcoal blazer and pulled out a sleek black leather wallet. He flipped it open. The third slot, where his titanium-grade marina clearance badge always sat, was completely empty. ""It's gone. Someone picked my pocket.""
Beside Dominic, his nephew Elliot Romano let out an exasperated sigh, shaking his head with an air of theatrical regret. ""Come on, Gavin. You've protected this family since I was in diapers, but losing your clearance card during a high-profile family summit? Or worse... selling it? Uncle Dominic, we have seven armed men on the dock right now. Disarm him and search his vehicle before we jump to conclusions. For all we know, the old man has finally turned against us.""
Clare Bennett pulled her trembling daughter closer to her chest. Sophie buried her tear-streaked face into her mother’s faded floral apron, clutching the blunt blue crayon like a talisman. Dominic noticed the child’s distress. Despite the lethal threat hanging over the dock, the billionaire mafia patriarch knelt down again, placing his warm, heavy hand gently on Sophie’s small shoulder.
""Nobody touches this little girl or her mother,"" Dominic commanded without looking back at his men. ""Gavin, hand your piece to Marco. Not because I believe you betrayed me, but because procedure keeps everybody alive.""
Gavin didn’t hesitate. He unholstered his custom .45 caliber pistol by the barrel, presenting the grip to Marco, Dominic’s secondary bodyguard. ""Search my room. Search my phone. Check the timestamps. I haven't left your side since three o'clock, Dominic.""
""He speaks the truth on that,"" Dominic murmured, standing back up. ""He was with me in the study signing the port manifests. Which means someone walked into his quarters or bumped into him during the prep dinner.""
Suddenly, a loud thump reverberated from the stern of the Aurelia. Dominic’s younger sister, Elena, stepped out from the main salon deck in an emerald silk evening gown, a glass of vintage Pinot Noir in her hand. ""Dominic! Are we casting off or admiring the sea breeze? The Chilean sea bass is drying out, and the twins are complaining about the Wi-Fi cut-off!""
""Elena, step back inside the salon and do not come out,"" Dominic ordered, his voice cutting through the bay wind like a whip. ""Tell everyone inside to remain seated away from the glass. Marco! Evacuate the yacht through the bow service gangway right now. Quietly. No panic.""
Elena's glass slipped from her manicured fingers, shattering across the teak wood deck. Red wine pooled like fresh blood.
Sophie tugged at Clare’s skirt and whispered, ""Mommy, the bad man... he had shiny shoes like Mr. Elliot.""
The words were soft, spoken in a terrified child's innocence, but on that quiet dock, they sounded like a thunderclap. Elliot's confident smile instantly froze into an awkward mask of shock.
""What did you just say, kid?"" Elliot snapped, his voice sharp and aggressive as he took an intimidating step toward the housekeeper and her daughter. ""Are you making things up now? Uncle Dominic, she’s pointing fingers at random people! Clare, control your spoiled brat before I have you both thrown off the estate grounds without a dime!""

Dominic shifted his weight, putting his broad frame directly between Elliot and the terrified child. ""Watch your mouth, Elliot. She just saved your life, whether you have the brains to realize it or not. Marco, call the harbor bomb squad. And get our private divers into the water immediately. If there is a black box strapped beneath my ship, I want it identified before the sunset fades.""
The ocean currents began to churn as two black-suited divers readied their gear at the edge of the dock. The mystery of the Aurelia had only just begun to unravel.
