Chapter 9 - The Official Warrant

Six months later, the Cattaneo estate had undergone a transformation that baffled every political and business analyst in northern Italy.

The high-caliber security cameras were still there, but the machine-gun nests had been dismantled, replaced by flourishing trellises of purple wisteria and climbing sweet jasmine. The vast, sterile lawn where armored motorcades once parked now featured a massive wooden playset complete with two spiraling slides, three swings, and a miniature treehouse built in the shape of a yellow firefighter station.

The Cattaneo syndicate had officially dissolved its underworld operations, successfully transitioning its immense wealth into international clean-energy shipping, maritime logistics, and philanthropic educational trusts across Lombardy. Lorenzo Cattaneo remained one of the wealthiest and most influential men in Europe, but the shadow of blood had been thoroughly scrubbed from his name.

On a warm Saturday morning, the grand conference room was once again filled with twenty prominent international business delegates, all dressed in bespoke suits, reviewing a landmark five-billion-euro green port infrastructure deal.

Lorenzo sat at the head of the table in an open-collared linen shirt, looking healthier, younger, and utterly relaxed.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors clicked open.

The entire boardroom went completely silent. Several visiting foreign dignitaries looked toward the entrance in surprise.

A four-year-old girl strode into the room with absolute authority. She was wearing a pink tulle ballerina tutu over a pair of bright red cowboy boots. Under her arm was a brand new, thick leather-bound notebook embossed in gold with her initials: M.C.—Mia Cattaneo.

In her hand was a gleaming brass magnifying glass with an amber handle.

Behind her walked Sophia, dressed in an elegant cream-colored summer dress, a soft, radiant smile on her face, carrying a silver tray with a fresh pot of espresso.

""Meeting is paused,"" Mia announced loudly, marching directly to the head of the table.

The delegates looked at each other in confusion, then turned to Lorenzo, waiting for the billionaire tycoon to dismiss the child.

Instead, Lorenzo immediately pushed his paperwork aside, stood up from his leather chair, and bowed deeply at the waist. ""Good morning, Inspector Cattaneo. To what do we owe this unexpected audit?""

""Inspection time,"" Mia said solemnly. She pointed at his lap. ""Up.""

Lorenzo didn't hesitate for a single second. In front of twenty global corporate executives, the former Don scooped his daughter up and hoisted her onto his broad shoulders.

Mia leaned down, carefully inspecting his thick, dark curls through her brass glass. She parted a section behind his ear, nodded approvingly, and pulled her little gold pen from her tutu waistband.

""Hair hygiene: Passed,"" Mia declared, making a vigorous checkmark in her notebook. ""Coffee intake: Needs monitoring. You owe Mommy a kiss and you owe me two scoops of pistachio gelato.""

A chorus of quiet chuckles rippled across the conference table as the delegates realized this was not an interruption, but a cherished household tradition.

Lorenzo smiled up at his daughter, his eyes shining with pure joy. ""Pistachio? You traded strawberry for pistachio?""

""Pistachio is green. Green means go,"" Mia explained with toddler logic, tapping his helmet of curls. ""Go buy gelato.""

""Your terms are acceptable, Boss,"" Lorenzo laughed, setting her gently back down on the floor.

Sophia walked over, setting the espresso tray on the credenza, and Lorenzo immediately caught her around the waist, pulling her flush against his side. In full view of the entire room, he leaned down and pressed a deep, tender kiss to her lips, drawing a dramatic, loud ""Ewwww!"" from Mia, who promptly covered her eyes with her notebook.

""You're corrupting the delegates, Lorenzo,"" Sophia whispered against his cheek, blushing beautifully.

""Let them learn how a real empire is managed,"" Lorenzo whispered back, his gray eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that had only grown deeper with every passing month.

Fausto stood quietly in the corner by the terrace, a satisfied smile creasing his weathered face. He reached into his pocket, took out an old ledger, and gently closed it for the last time.

The war was over. The house had won.
