Chapter 8 - The Emergency Bath

The grandfather clock in the main entrance hall of the Cattaneo estate struck 3:00 AM when the heavy double doors swung open.
Sophia was sitting on the grand staircase, her face pale, Mia’s rabbit Bruno clutched tightly in her lap. When she saw the silhouette of Lorenzo stepping into the foyer, carrying a sleeping child wrapped in his dark wool coat, her breath caught in her throat.
She scrambled down the stairs, her knees nearly buckling, running across the marble floor until she collided with Lorenzo.
""Mia! Oh God, Mia!"" Sophia wept hysterically, reaching for her daughter.
Mia stirred, rubbing her eyes with the back of her chubby hand, blinking at the bright chandelier light. ""Mommy... Lorenzo drove very fast. He made the tires scream like monsters.""
Sophia pulled Mia out of Lorenzo's arms, crushing her daughter against her neck, raining desperate kisses across her cheeks, her forehead, her hair. ""You're okay... You're safe... My sweet baby girl...""
Lorenzo stood watching them, his face bruised and bloody, his coat torn, leaning heavily against the banister. For the first time, the imposing mafia don looked utterly exhausted, stripped of all arrogance, humbled by the sheer miracle of life standing before him.
Fausto appeared from the corridor, carrying a first-aid kit and a basin of warm water. ""I have summoned the estate physician, Don Lorenzo.""
""Cancel the doctor,"" Mia suddenly announced, wriggling out of Sophia's arms and dropping her boots onto the floor with a soft thud. She marched straight over to Lorenzo, pointing a finger at his ripped, soot-covered shirt. ""He is covered in bad-guy dust. He needs a bath right now. Immediately!""
Lorenzo let out a soft, weary chuckle, running a bloody hand through his wild curls. ""Mia, it is three o'clock in the morning. Even detectives sleep at three.""
""No sleeping,"" Mia insisted, grabbing him by the hem of his trousers and pulling with all her might toward the grand bathroom on the main floor. ""If you don't wash off the dust, the monsters will follow you into your dreams! Move your boots, Mr. Boss Man!""
Ten minutes later, the grand master bathroom was filled with the sweet scent of lavender and steam.
Lorenzo sat cross-legged on the plush white rug beside the massive clawfoot marble bathtub, his shirt removed, bandages taped across his ribs and cheek. Sitting on the porcelain rim of the tub, armed with a soft sponge and a bottle of strawberry baby shampoo, was Mia.
She vigorously scrubbed Lorenzo's dark curls, piling a ridiculous mountain of white foam on top of his head until it looked like a towering chef's hat.
""Stop moving your ears,"" Mia commanded, wiping a blob of foam off his nose. ""I am neutralizing the threat.""
Sophia stood leaning against the doorway, watching the scene with tears shimmering in her eyes. For four years, she had feared this man's power. But looking at him now—sitting quietly on the floor, allowing a three-year-old girl to dump strawberry suds over his head while he smiled with pure, unadulterated devotion—she realized the truth. Lorenzo was not a monster to be feared; he was a father who had walked through hellfire just to hear his daughter's laugh.
""Sophia,"" Lorenzo called out softly, looking up through the suds. ""Come here.""
Sophia walked over, kneeling beside him on the rug. Lorenzo reached out, taking her hand gently in his, his thumb tracing the soft skin of her wrist.
""I am stepping down,"" Lorenzo murmured, his voice filled with an emotional weight that shook Sophia to her core. ""I have already instructed Fausto to initiate the restructuring. Dino and the council will manage the logistics and legitimate corporate holdings. The weapons, the territory wars, the blood feud—it ends tonight.""
Sophia gasped, staring at him in disbelief. ""Lorenzo... you can't just walk away from the syndicate. Nobody leaves.""
""I am Lorenzo Cattaneo,"" he replied, a flash of his old, unbreakable pride returning to his smile. ""I decide when I enter, and I decide when I leave. I spent eleven years building an empire because I thought power was the only thing that could keep a man safe. But tonight, when that bastard held a gun to her head, I realized that all the gold and guns in Italy aren't worth a single strand of her hair.""
Mia dumped another cup of warm water over his head, effectively rinsing away the bubbles and soaking Lorenzo's lapels in the process.

""All clean!"" Mia declared triumphantly, inspecting his hair with her one remaining half of the plastic magnifying glass. ""The curls are happy now. Look, Mommy, no more grumpy lines!""
Lorenzo laughed, wrapping both arms around Mia and pulling her into a warm, wet hug, pulling Sophia into the circle with them. For the first time in four years, the family was whole.
