Chapter 10 - Forever In The Notebook

The sun was slowly sinking behind the snow-capped Alps, painting the waters of Lake Como in breathtaking shades of violet, gold, and burning rose.
Out on the private wooden pier extending into the calm water, a cozy blanket was spread across the warm cedar planks. A silver ice bucket held a bottle of sparkling prosecco, while a small cooler sat beside it, packed with three pints of artisan gelato—two strawberry, one pistachio.
Lorenzo sat with his back against a wooden post, Sophia nestled securely between his legs, her head resting comfortably on his chest. Lorenzo's arms were wrapped around her waist, his fingers laced with hers, their matching platinum wedding bands catching the last glints of daylight.
A few yards down the pier, Mia was sitting cross-legged on a low cushion, wearing a tiny pair of oversized denim overalls over her bathing suit. Her wild curls blew gently in the evening lake breeze.
She was utterly absorbed in her work. Her new leather notebook was open on her lap, and she was gripping her favorite purple crayon with the same two-finger-and-thumb grip she had used since she was two years old.
""What are you recording, little detective?"" Lorenzo called out, his voice filled with the quiet, unshakeable peace that had finally found a home in his soul.
Mia didn't look up immediately. She carefully drew three neat, distinct dots inside a triangle in the corner of the page, then added a flurry of yellow hearts around the border. Finally, she snapped the notebook shut with an authoritative thud, pulled the elastic band over the cover, and scrambled across the blanket into their laps.
She wedged herself directly between Lorenzo and Sophia, throwing one arm around her mother's neck and resting her chin squarely on Lorenzo's collarbone.
""I wrote the final report,"" Mia announced proudly.
""Did you now?"" Sophia smiled, brushing a stray lock of dark curl from her daughter's forehead. ""And what does the final report say?""
Mia tapped the cover of her notebook with her brass magnifying glass. ""It says: The house is safe. The monsters are gone. Mommy's hands aren't shaking anymore. And Lorenzo has the best curls in Italy.""
Lorenzo choked back a surge of emotion, his heart swelling until he felt it might burst from sheer gratitude. He leaned down, pressing his lips against the top of Mia's head, breathing in the sweet scent of lavender, strawberry shampoo, and innocent sunshine.
""And what about Bruno?"" Lorenzo asked softly, nudging the one-eared stuffed rabbit tucked beside her knee. ""Does Bruno approve of the report?""
""Bruno says Lorenzo needs to share his gelato,"" Mia replied instantly, snatching a plastic spoon from the cooler and digging a massive scoop of strawberry straight from the container.
Sophia laughed, a bright, melodic sound that echoed across the quiet waters of the lake, leaning her head back against Lorenzo’s shoulder as he kissed her temple.
As the dusk settled over Lake Como and the first evening stars flickered to life in the purple sky, the former Don of northern Italy held his wife and daughter close against his chest. He had fought a hundred battles, conquered empires, and survived a thousand treacherous shadows, but as he listened to the gentle rhythm of his daughter's giggles and his wife's steady heartbeat, he knew that his greatest victory had begun on the day a fearless little girl walked into his boardroom, climbed onto his shoulders, and ordered him to wash his hair.
Beneath the warm lamplight of the pier, resting on the cedar planks, lay the open page of Mia’s notebook.

There, scrawled in bold, crooked purple crayon beneath the triangular knot of their family crest, were the final words of her grand investigation:
Case Closed. Daddy is Home."
