Chapter 5 - The Red Envelope

The Cattaneo estate transformed instantly into a war zone. Tactical sirens wailed across the hillsides, floodlights bathed the manicured lawns in blinding white luminescence, and sixty heavily armed operatives flooded the perimeters, chambering rounds into assault rifles.
Inside the command center, Lorenzo stood over a massive digital tactical map, his face pale as marble, his eyes burning with an unholy fire. His silk shirt was rolled to the elbows, exposing the intricate, scarred ink spanning his forearms.
Sophia collapsed into a chair in the corner, clutching Mia’s one-eared rabbit Bruno against her chest, rocking back and forth as silent, wracking sobs tore through her body. ""I told you... I told you they would take her... My baby... She's only three years old...""
Lorenzo walked over to her, dropping down onto one knee. For the first time in his life, the ruthless Don allowed his men to see him bow his head. He took Sophia's trembling, cold hands into his own, pressing his forehead against her knuckles.
""Listen to me, Sophia,"" Lorenzo whispered, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, absolute conviction. ""I swear to you on the graves of my ancestors, on the blood running through my veins, I will bring our daughter home before the sun rises. If Marco Rinaldi so much as scratches her skin, I will dismantle his entire bloodline brick by brick. Look at me, Sophia. Trust me.""
Sophia looked into his eyes—the exact same fierce, unbreakable gray eyes as their daughter—and slowly, desperately, she nodded.
""Don Lorenzo!"" Fausto called out, his face grim as he hurried into the room carrying a sealed crimson envelope lined in gold leaf. ""A courier on a motorcycle just tossed this over the north gate. The rider was neutralized, but he took a cyanide capsule before interrogation.""
Lorenzo snatched the envelope, tearing it open with savage urgency. Inside was an encrypted flash drive and a handwritten note on expensive linen parchment:
Lorenzo,
You grew soft the moment that bastard child climbed onto your shoulders. Northern Italy cannot be governed by a man who laughs at kindergarten jokes. If you want to see your little detective draw another breath, bring the master cryptographic keys to the Milan port accounts and the deed to the Genoa shipping terminals to the abandoned textile mill in Varese by midnight.
Come alone. No snipers. No drones. If I see a single Cattaneo soldier within two miles of the perimeter, I will test whether your daughter’s curls are truly bulletproof.
Cordially,
Marco Rinaldi & Salvatore Romano.
The lieutenants in the room leaned forward, their faces dark with fury. ""Don Lorenzo, it's a blatant trap,"" his chief enforcer, Dino, growled. ""Salvatore Romano has fifty mercenary guns stationed in Varese. If you walk into that mill alone without your guard, they will execute you on sight and keep the girl as collateral anyway!""
""Then let them try,"" Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a deadly, horrifying calm that signaled a slaughter was imminent. He stood up, turning toward the armory lockers built into the wall. ""Dino, prepare the armored Maserati. Transfer the master account keys to a decoy drive with a military-grade logic bomb embedded in the root directory.""
""And what about us, Boss?"" Dino asked, loading his sidearm. ""We ride with you.""
""No,"" Lorenzo replied, sliding a customized pair of black semi-automatic pistols into his shoulder holsters and pulling on a dark Kevlar trench coat. ""You will circle the perimeter through the old canal tunnels beneath the river. When the shooting starts, you ensure not a single Romano soldier leaves that valley alive. But the mill itself belongs to me.""

He turned back to Sophia. He walked over, leaned down, and gently kissed the crown of her head, lingering for a heartbeat. ""Wait for us in the library, Sophia. Put the strawberry gelato in the freezer. Mia is going to be hungry when we get back.""
Without waiting for another word, Lorenzo strode out into the night, the engine of the twin-turbocharged Maserati roaring to life like a caged beast unleashed upon the world.
