Chapter 7 - The Don's Fury

Lorenzo emerged from the inferno of the blown doorway like an avenging demon from the depths of hell. His Kevlar coat flapped around him, twin muzzle flashes illuminating the darkness as his custom pistols barked in rhythmic, lethal succession.
Two Romano mercenaries went down before they could even shoulder their rifles, dropped instantly by center-mass rounds.
""Kill him! Kill him now!"" Rinaldi shrieked, diving behind a stack of rusted steel shipping crates.
The remaining mercenaries opened fire, spraying automatic rounds toward the entrance. Concrete pulverized into dust, sparks flying in violent showers off the steel pillars. But Lorenzo moved with fluid, terrifying efficiency, rolling behind an industrial iron loom, returning fire with pinpoint accuracy. Every shot he took was calculated, brutal, and fatal.
In the center of the basement, Mia remained sitting on the metal table, entirely unfazed by the cacophony of gunfire. She simply clamped both hands over her ears, ducked her head inside her yellow firefighter helmet, and shouted:
""I told you! Tactical error!""
Lorenzo vaulted over a fallen support beam, cutting down another gunman with a double-tap. He was bleeding from a graze on his cheek where a ricochet had sliced his flesh, but his eyes never wavered from the table where Mia sat.
Suddenly, Salvatore Romano lunged from the shadows, grabbing Mia by the scruff of her yellow jacket, lifting her off the table and pulling her in front of his chest like a human shield. He pressed the cold barrel of a magnum revolver against her temple.
""Drop your weapons, Cattaneo!"" Romano roared, his voice trembling with adrenaline. ""Drop them, or I paint this concrete with your daughter's brains!""
The warehouse fell dead silent, save for the crackle of burning debris and the heavy, ragged breathing of the two syndicate titans.
Lorenzo froze. Slowly, deliberately, he lowered his weapons, his eyes locking onto Romano’s weapon pressed against Mia’s small head. Every muscle in Lorenzo's body coiled like a steel spring.
""Let her go, Salvatore,"" Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a register so cold, so profoundly lethal, that the temperature in the room seemed to plummet ten degrees. ""You wanted my empire? Take it. The accounts, the ports, the territories. It's all on the drive in my car. Let the child walk to the door.""
""Do you take me for an idiot?"" Romano laughed maniacally. ""The moment I let her go, your snipers take my head off! No, Cattaneo. You're going to get on your knees. Right now! Kneel before me, or she dies!""
Mia looked over Romano's forearm, her little eyes finding Lorenzo's face. She saw the blood on his cheek. She saw the raw, agonizing terror in the eyes of a man who ruled half of Italy—terror not for his own life, but for hers.
""Lorenzo,"" Mia piped up, her voice surprisingly clear in the tense standoff. ""He didn't wash his hands before touching me. That is a major violation.""
""Shut up, you little brat!"" Romano yelled, momentarily shifting his grip on the heavy magnum to shake her.
It was the only mistake Lorenzo needed.
Mia suddenly threw her head backward with all the force her tiny body could muster, the hard plastic rim of her firefighter helmet slamming squarely into Romano's broken nose with a sickening crunch.
Romano howled in pain, stumbling backward as blood gushed from his nostrils, his gun arm swinging wildly off-target.
In a fraction of a millisecond, Lorenzo closed the ten-foot gap like a predator striking. His hand shot forward, knocking the magnum into the shadows with a bone-shattering strike, while his other arm swept around Mia, pulling her into his chest and shielding her entirely with his armored body.
Romano reached for a combat knife, but Lorenzo's boot caught him under the chin, launching the older Don backward onto the concrete floor, unconscious before he even hit the ground.
Lorenzo spun around, dropping to his knees, his hands trembling violently as he checked every inch of Mia's body. ""Mia... Mia, look at me. Are you hurt? Did they touch you? Look at Daddy—look at Lorenzo!""
Mia pushed her helmet back up her forehead. She looked at his bleeding cheek, reached out a tiny, dirt-smudged finger, and gently touched the cut.
""You got a scratch, Mr. Boss Man,"" she whispered softly. ""Mommy has to put a princess bandage on it.""
Lorenzo let out a choked, ragged sob, crushing the little girl against his chest, burying his face into her wild curls as tears finally broke through his hardened exterior. ""You're safe, little detective. You're safe now.""
A shadow suddenly rose behind them. Marco Rinaldi stood ten feet away, a submachine gun leveled directly at Lorenzo's exposed back.
""Touching family reunion, Don Lorenzo,"" Rinaldi sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger. ""Say goodbye to your daughter.""
Before Rinaldi could pull the trigger, three deafening cracks echoed from the rafters above. Three high-caliber sniper rounds punched through Rinaldi's chest, throwing him violently backward into the puddle of rainwater, dead before his body hit the floor.
Dino and a squad of tactical enforcers dropped down from the ceiling ropes, weapons raised, sweeping the room.
""Perimeter secure, Don Lorenzo,"" Dino reported breathlessly. ""The Romano clan has been eliminated across all sectors. It’s over.""
May you like
Lorenzo didn't even look at the bodies. He stood up, hoisting Mia securely into his arms, letting her rest her head on his shoulder.
""Take care of the cleanup,"" Lorenzo ordered softly. ""I have a meeting to attend at home.""
