Chapter 9 - The Debt That Cannot Be Paid

Damian stayed on his knees beside Leo's grave for nearly twenty minutes, speaking silent prayers while the ocean waves crashed against the cliffs below.
When he finally stood up, he wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, looking at me with a profound, humble reverence that no amount of money could ever manufacture.
"I resigned from Moretti Global last month," he said quietly, keeping a respectful three feet of space between us.
"Julian told my lawyer," I replied, nodding slowly. "He said you transferred thirty percent of the voting shares into a neonatal research foundation."
"It's named the Leo Moretti Children's Wing at Children's Hospital Los Angeles," Damian said, his voice steadying. "We funded eighty new specialized ventilators and twenty full-time neonatal surgical fellowships. It won't bring him back, and it won't undo the fifty-five minutes I wasted in France, but no other mother will have to watch her child run out of oxygen because an executive helicopter wasn't available."
"That's a good thing, Damian," I said honestly. "That's the kind of work a father should do."
"How are you living, Claire?" he asked gently, searching my face with cautious care. "Are you happy in the cottage?"
"I'm peaceful," I replied, looking out over the sparkling expanse of Monterey Bay. "I finished my master's degree in botanical design. I teach landscaping to young girls at the community center down the coast. I sleep through the night now."
"Does it still hurt?" he whispered.
May you like
"Every single morning," I replied, meeting his dark eyes without flinching. "The difference is, it doesn't hurt with anger anymore. It just hurts with love that has nowhere left to go."
Damian nodded, swallowing hard against the lump in his throat, finally understanding that true repentance didn't mean winning back the woman he lost; it meant ensuring her life was safe, dignified, and entirely unburdened by his shadow.
