Chapter 3 - The Ghost Trail

By forty-eight hours after the funeral he was never invited to attend, Damian had hired three separate elite private intelligence firms.

None of them were affiliated with his family security force, bypassing the operational directive he had foolishly signed. Yet, every single investigator returned with the exact same grim report: Claire Moretti had vanished into thin air without leaving a single digital footprint.

"She didn't use an ATM, Mr. Moretti," the lead investigator, a former federal marshal named Miller, explained across Damian's mahogany desk. "She didn't use her passport, she didn't board a commercial flight, and she didn't check into a single hotel chain in North America."

"People do not simply evaporate into thin air!" Damian roared, slamming both fists onto his desk, scattering stacks of unread corporate balance sheets. "She has twenty-two stitches in her abdomen! She is medically compromised!"

"She had help," Miller replied evenly, pulling out a grainy surveillance still taken from a gas station outside Barstow.

The photograph showed an ordinary, ten-year-old grey station wagon with faded California plates. A woman wearing an oversized winter jacket and a wool cap was leaning against the passenger side, her hand pressed protectively against her lower stomach.

"Who was driving?" Damian demanded, lunging forward to grab the photograph.

"A woman named Elena Vance," Miller said. "She runs an independent medical safehouse network for displaced women in Northern California. Her organization is completely off-grid, funded by private trusts that don't interface with standard banking clearinghouses."

"Buy the network," Damian ordered without blinking. "Find out who holds their mortgage and buy it out from under them by noon tomorrow."

"You can't buy this one, Mr. Moretti," Miller replied with a grim, pitying look. "The primary benefactor who endowed that trust five years ago was your late mother, Evelyn Moretti. The charter states that no direct male heir of the Moretti line can ever access the beneficiary rolls or alter the properties."

Damian slumped back into his leather chair, the room spinning around him.

His own mother, who had spent decades suffering in silence under his tyrannical father's affairs, had built the very sanctuary that was now sheltering Claire from him.

Every cruel wall he had constructed, every arrogant legal loophole he had designed to isolate his wife, had turned into an impenetrable fortress locking him on the outside forever.
