Chapter 8 - The Meeting By The Bay

A year after the darkest night of my life, the spring sun shone brightly over the quiet, manicured lawns of a small memorial park overlooking Monterey Bay.

The ocean breeze carried the clean scent of cypress trees and salt spray. A small, polished white marble headstone stood beneath the shade of an ancient oak, bearing simple, timeless words: Leo Moretti — Loved For Every Breath.

I stood beside the stone, wearing a simple pale blue dress, placing a small bouquet of fresh white daisies against the base of the marble.

A soft crunch of gravel on the footpath behind me signaled someone approaching.

I didn't turn around in panic, because I had agreed to this meeting through my attorney. When I looked over my shoulder, I saw Damian standing twenty paces away, waiting with his hands clasped behind his back, asking for silent permission to approach.

He looked completely transformed.

The ruthless, arrogant CEO with slicked-back hair and custom Italian suits was gone; in his place stood a man in simple dark slacks and an unbranded navy sweater, his hair cropped short and touched with silver at the temples.

"You can come closer, Damian," I said softly, my voice carried by the wind.

He took slow, reverent steps across the grass, stopping beside the marker and dropping to his knees without hesitation.

He reached out a trembling hand, his fingertips gently tracing the engraved letters of our son's name, his shoulders tightening as he fought to hold back his tears.

"Leo," Damian whispered, the name catching in his throat like a jagged stone. "He has a beautiful name, Claire."

"He had your stubborn chin," I told him, looking down at the man who had broken my world, feeling neither burning hatred nor rekindled romance, but an immense, quiet pity for what he had chosen to discard.
