Chapter 1 - The Paper That Bound Him

Damian snatched the heavy cream envelope from Marcus's gloved hand, tearing the embossed wax seal with trembling, frantic fingers.
The hospital corridor smelled of harsh bleach and dying hope. His heart pounded violently against his ribs as he recognized his own crisp, arrogant signature stamped in bold black ink across the bottom of the page.
It was an executive operational directive dated seven months prior, issued during the exact week Alessia had convinced him that Claire was using her pregnancy to manipulate his public schedule.
"Read clause four, Mr. Moretti," Marcus said in a low, measured tone, keeping his eyes firmly fixed on the blank linoleum floor.
Damian's gaze darted down the printed lines, the words blurring before snapping into sharp, horrifying focus: Under no circumstances shall Moretti Global Protection track, pursue, intercept, or detain Claire Moretti if she exercises her legal right to vacate any marital residence or medical facility.
Any officer attempting to locate her against her explicit, signed directive shall be subject to immediate summary dismissal, total pension forfeiture, and private civil litigation.
"You made us sign personal non-disclosure covenants and indemnities," Marcus continued, his voice void of any warmth. "You looked me in the eye in your penthouse boardroom and told me that if your wife ever decided to pack her bags and walk away, we were to let her leave without asking a single question."
Damian choked on a dry, breathless sob, clutching the paper against his chest as if the document were physically crushing his lungs.
"That was about her threatening to visit her sister in Seattle!" Damian yelled, his voice cracking and echoing down the desolate, empty hallway of the neonatal wing. "This is completely different! Our son is dead! She is in shock and bleeding somewhere out in the city!"
"The directive contains no exceptions, sir," Marcus answered, not budging an inch. "And Mrs. Moretti countersigned an activation rider twenty minutes before she checked out of this wing."
Damian leaned back against the cold painted wall, sliding down slowly until his knees touched the floor.
He reached inside the brown paper bag left on the chair of Room 807, pulling out the fourteen-second video file on Claire’s discarded phone. He tapped the cracked glass with a thumb that would not stop shaking.

On the screen, a fragile, tiny infant with a white knitted cap rested against Claire's hospital gown, taking his final, shallow gasps while Claire’s quiet, broken voice hummed a lullaby in the background.
"He waited twelve hours for you, Damian," Claire’s whispered voice on the recording finished, right before the monitor flatlined into a long, merciless tone. "Don't bother looking for where we bury him."
