Chapter 8 - The Weight of Justice

The federal courthouse downtown smelled of old paper, polished mahogany, and the solemn weight of inevitable justice.
Three months had passed since that fateful afternoon in the bank lobby. My pregnancy had progressed into its ninth month; my belly was large, round, and healthy, carrying the lively kicks of my daughter, whom I had already decided to name Eleanor, after my late mother.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Uncle Vincent and our legal team. I wore a modest, dignified ivory coat that accented the radiant glow on my face. The haunted, hollow-eyed woman who had clipped coupons and lived in fear of Richard's wrath was gone forever. In her place stood a woman restored to her rightful power, carrying the ancient lineage of an unbroken family.
At the defense table sat Richard Mitchell.
The change in him was staggering. Dressed in a drab orange correctional jumpsuit, his hands shackled to a chain looped around his waist, he looked thirty pounds lighter and ten years older. His once-immaculate hair was cropped unevenly, and the arrogant sneer had been replaced by a vacant, defeated hollow stare.
Beside him, Chloe Davenport sat in identical correctional clothing, her roots showing inches of gray and brown beneath her faded blonde dye job. Having attempted to flee the state with fifty thousand dollars in hidden bearer bonds, she had been denied bail and charged as Richard's co-conspirator.
The presiding judge, an elderly woman with silver hair and eyes that pierced through deceit, adjusted her spectacles and tapped her gavel twice.
""In the matter of the State and United States versus Richard Mitchell and Chloe Davenport,"" the judge announced, her voice echoing in the vaulted courtroom. ""The court has reviewed the negotiated plea agreements entered by the defense teams in light of the overwhelming forensic evidence provided by the Vance Sovereign audit division.""
Richard kept his head down, tears dripping from the tip of his nose onto the varnished defense table.
""Richard Mitchell,"" the judge continued, ""you systematically embezzled over ninety million dollars from your corporate entity, defrauded commercial lenders, concealed marital assets with malicious intent, and subjected your pregnant spouse to physical violence in a public commercial facility. Your behavior represents the absolute apex of predatory arrogance.""
The judge looked down at the paperwork before delivering the final hammer blows.
""On counts one through four of federal wire and securities fraud, you are sentenced to fifteen years at the federal penitentiary in Allenwood, with no possibility of early parole. Furthermore, the court orders full restitution in the amount of ninety-four million dollars, to be satisfied via total forfeiture of all personal properties, trusts, and vaulted assets. You are stripped of all corporate licenses, permanently barred from serving as an officer in any public or private corporation, and your parental rights regarding the infant Eleanor Mitchell-Vance are hereby permanently terminated with prejudice.""
""No... God, please no..."" Richard sobbed, burying his face in his shackled hands as his shoulders heaved with violent grief. ""Sarah... look at me... please tell them to stop...""
I did not look at him with anger, hatred, or spite. I looked at him with profound, untouchable indifference. He was a stranger whose sins had finally caught up to his ambitions.
""Chloe Davenport,"" the judge continued, turning her gaze toward the trembling former marketing director. ""For your role in grand larceny and conspiracy to conceal stolen corporate funds, you are sentenced to seven years of incarceration, along with full asset restitution. Take them into custody.""
As the bailiffs stepped forward and hauled Richard to his feet, the chains clinking heavily against his jumpsuit, he twisted his head toward the gallery, catching my eyes one final time.

""I'm sorry, Sarah!"" he screamed as the courtroom doors opened to lead him toward the underground transport cells. ""I'm so sorry! Forgive me! Please, I have nothing left!""
""You had everything, Richard,"" I whispered under my breath as the doors swung shut, cutting off his pathetic cries forever. ""You had a family who loved you, and you threw it away for numbers on a screen.""
