Chapter 7 - The Downward Spiral

Stripped of his CEO title, locked out of his corporate offices, and with every single domestic and offshore bank account frozen under federal forensic review, Richard Mitchell found himself in a reality he had never imagined in his worst nightmares.

He had spent the night in a dingy eighty-dollar motel room near the industrial docks, paying with the sixty dollars in loose cash he had managed to scrounge from his glove compartment before the repo agency towed his leased Porsche Cayenne.

His tailored suit was wrinkled and stained with cheap coffee. His phone buzzed every two minutes with terrifying text notifications: credit cards declined, country club membership revoked, emergency board removal notices, and furious voicemails from his high-society acquaintances demanding immediate repayment of personal loans he had taken out under false pretenses.

Desperate and delirious with mounting panic, Richard took a rattling city subway across town, his designer leather shoes sticking to grime on the train floor. He arrived at the wrought-iron gates of the Vance Manor in the historic Gold Coast district.

The sprawling estate spanned five acres of pristine manicured gardens, guarded by towering stone walls, automated surveillance turrets, and private security checkpoints. Behind the wrought iron, the century-old limestone mansion stood like a fortress of unassailable wealth.

Richard gripped the black iron bars, shaking them with all his remaining strength.

""Sarah! Sarah, let me in!"" he screamed into the intercom speaker, his voice hoarse and cracked. ""I know you're in there! You can't do this to me! I'm your husband! We made vows before God! You can't let your rich uncle destroy our family!""

A small camera mounted on the gate post swiveled toward him. After a long, humiliating pause, the speaker crackled to life.

""Mr. Mitchell,"" Vincent Vance-Rothschild's voice drifted out, calm, collected, and utterly lethal. ""You are trespassing on private property. If you do not vacate the perimeter within sixty seconds, the automated sprinkler system will activate, followed by immediate police intervention.""

""Vincent, please! Have mercy!"" Richard sobbed, sinking to his knees on the damp sidewalk, pressing his forehead against the cold iron bars. ""I have no money! I can't even buy a sandwich! Every card I possess has been declined! Sarah... Sarah, think of our baby! She needs a father! I will change, I swear to God I'll change! I'll do whatever you want!""

The heavy mahogany front doors of the distant mansion opened. Richard's heart leapt with foolish hope, thinking I had come running to forgive him.

Instead, two private security guards walked down the long, winding cobblestone driveway. They did not open the gates. They stopped ten feet away, and one of them tossed a sealed manila envelope through the bars. It landed in the dirt at Richard's trembling feet.

""What is this?"" Richard stammered, tearing the envelope open with shaking fingers.

Inside was a certified copy of the emergency restraining order signed by a family court judge that morning, along with a full copy of the criminal indictment filed by the United States Attorney for the Southern District. The charges listed were staggering: securities fraud, wire fraud, grand embezzlement, corporate identity theft, and aggravated domestic assault.

""The district attorney has issued a formal warrant for your arrest, Mr. Mitchell,"" the security guard announced emotionlessly. ""And if you look over your shoulder, you will see your welcoming committee.""

Richard spun around in pure terror. Two state police cruisers had just pulled up silently along the curb, their red and blue strobe lights casting garish reflections across the wet asphalt.

Two state troopers stepped out, handguns resting near their hips, their faces set in stone.

""Richard Mitchell?"" the lead officer called out, unhooking a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. ""Step away from the gate and put your hands behind your back. You're under arrest.""

Richard backed up against the cold iron bars, sliding down into the mud, weeping uncontrollably as the cold steel snapped around his wrists. For the first time in his pampered, predatory life, there was no money to buy his way out.
