Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Execution

The heavy oak doors of the bank's subterranean private boardroom clicked open with the muted finality of a prison cell door latching shut.

Richard sat at the far end of the long glass table, visibly disheveled. His tie was loosened, his designer jacket was slung carelessly over an empty chair, and sweat glistened across his forehead. Pacing nervously near the wet bar was Chloe Davenport, her designer red heels clicking erratically against the polished floor. When she saw Vincent and me walk in—flanked by three senior corporate litigators and two armed security commanders—she gasped and dropped her diamond-encrusted smartphone.

""Richard, what is the meaning of this?"" Chloe shrilled, pointing a manicured, crimson-tipped fingernail at me. ""Why is your scruffy, pregnant wife sitting in on an executive banking conference? She doesn't belong in the same postal code as this institution!""

Richard leapt to his feet, attempting to paste a charming, conciliatory smile onto his pale face as he approached Vincent. ""Mr. Vance-Rothschild, thank heavens you're back. There has been a terrible misunderstanding. Chloe and I were just reviewing our market expansion metrics. If my wife told you some ridiculous sob story about our household budget, I assure you she suffers from hormonal delusions brought on by the pregnancy. I give her an extremely generous cash allowance!""

""Is that so?"" Vincent said smoothly, taking the center executive chair while signaling the guards to pull out a plush leather seat for me directly opposite Richard.

I sat down, folding my hands over my pregnant stomach, staring straight into Richard's eyes. For the first time in eight years, I felt neither fear nor subservience. He looked small. Pitifully, pathetically small.

""Mr. Mitchell,"" Vincent began, sliding a single sheet of paper across the polished glass table. ""Do you recognize this document?""

Richard glanced down, and his breath hitched violently. ""That's... that's the syndicated revolving credit facility TechFlow signed with Metropolitan Trust four years ago.""

""Correct,"" Vincent nodded. ""And under Section 14, Subsection B of that covenant, the primary lender reserves the absolute, unconditional right to demand immediate, full repayment of all outstanding principal and interest within sixty minutes if the borrower engages in fraudulent concealment of assets, tax evasion, or criminal gross misconduct.""

Chloe let out an abrasive laugh. ""Demand immediate repayment? TechFlow owes your bank forty-two million dollars in operational debt! You can't just call a loan without a formal ninety-day notice period! Our legal department will tie you up in federal appellate court for five years!""

One of Vincent's litigators, an elderly man with shark-like eyes named Arthur Sterling, pushed his gold wire-rimmed glasses up his nose. ""Miss Davenport, I am the chief legal counsel for the Vance Sovereign Trust. I wrote that specific loan agreement. And if you examine the signature line on page forty-eight, you will notice that Richard Mitchell personally collateralized the loan using one hundred percent of his TechFlow voting shares, his personal real estate, and every offshore account tied to his tax identification number.""

Richard's knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of the table to keep from collapsing onto the floor. ""You... you can't do that. That would liquidate my entire life's work in an afternoon!""

""It isn't your life's work,"" I spoke up, my voice cutting through the heavy air with razor sharpness. Richard flinched as if I had struck him across the mouth. ""TechFlow was built on the algorithmic compression software I coded during our second year of marriage, Richard. You took my proprietary mathematical models, patented them under your name while I was recovering from pneumonia, and told me the company was drowning in seed-funding debt. You stole my brain, you stole my labor, and then you starved me.""

""Sarah, baby, please!"" Richard dropped to his knees, crawling toward my side of the table with wild, frantic eyes. ""I did it for us! For our future! I was building an empire for our child! Don't let this old man turn you against the father of your baby!""

""Touch her again,"" Vincent said, his voice dropping an octave into pure volcanic menace, ""and my security team will test the kinetic durability of that glass window with your spine.""

The guards took half a step forward, hands resting on their holstered sidearms. Richard halted on all fours, trembling like a whipped dog.

""Here is what happens next,"" Vincent declared, snapping his fingers. Arthur Sterling placed three new documents before Richard. ""Document one is an immediate default notice, transferring all voting shares and operational command of TechFlow Dynamics to the majority creditor: Sarah Vance-Rothschild.""

Chloe shrieked in horror. ""You're giving the company to her?!""

""Document two,"" Vincent continued, ignoring the outburst, ""is an unconditional transfer of the four-million-dollar downtown penthouse into Sarah's sole ownership. Miss Davenport, you have exactly ninety minutes to vacate the property before city marshals throw your luggage onto the curb. Any jewelry purchased with corporate funds will be confiscated as stolen property.""

Chloe spun around to Richard, her face contorted in rage. ""You idiot! You told me she was an ignorant country bumpkin with no living family! You said she couldn't count past ten without a calculator!""

""And document three,"" I said softly, looking down at my groveling husband, ""is an unconditional divorce settlement. You forfeit all claims to my daughter. You will sign away your parental rights, Richard. Because a man who would shove his unborn child toward a stone pillar will never, ever breathe the same air as my baby.""
