Chapter 7 - Facing the Demon

The maximum-security wing of the Metropolitan Detention Center smelled of bleach, damp concrete, and despair. It was a world Grant Sterling had never envisioned for himself during his meteoric rise through Manhattan high society.

When the heavy steel door buzzed open, Grant was brought in wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, his wrists and ankles secured with heavy transport chains. The contrast between his current reality and the polished executive who had checked his luxury watch two days ago was astonishing. His face was hollow, dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes, and his hands shook with uncontrollable tremors of withdrawal and fear.

He sat down across the visitation table, the chains clattering against the metal bench. He looked up at me, his eyes burning with a volatile mixture of hatred, humiliation, and desperate longing.

""You think you’re so clever, don't you, Rosalind?"" he rasped, his voice raw. ""You played the submissive, doting wife for three years, just waiting for me to slip up.""

""I never played a game, Grant,"" I answered calmly, keeping my hands folded neatly on the table. ""I loved you. I believed in your potential. I gave you a seat at the most powerful corporate table in the country because I thought you were a good man who had simply been dealt a rough hand in life. But you weren't an ambitious underdog. You were a parasite.""

Grant let out a bitter, jagged laugh. ""Your father treated me like a beggar! He looked down his aristocratic nose at me every single day! He knew I wasn't born into his elite country club circle. When I proposed that expansion into foreign logistics, he laughed in my face! He called my ideas reckless! He was going to fire me, Rosalind! He was going to expose my old bankruptcy and kick me out onto the street with nothing!""

""He wasn't going to kick you out, Grant,"" I said quietly, leaning forward so he could hear the tragic irony of his actions. ""My father knew you had gambling debts. He knew you made terrible financial decisions in your youth. Do you know what he told me the night before he died?""

Grant stopped breathing, his eyes darting across my face. ""What?""

""He told me that despite your flaws, he wanted to protect our marriage. He had drafted an agreement to quietly settle your forty-million-dollar offshore liability out of his private philanthropic trust. He was going to give you a clean slate, Grant. He was going to retire and hand the complete co-chairmanship of Whitmore Holdings to both of us jointly. He loved me so much that he was willing to forgive you.""

Grant froze. The blood drained from his face until his lips turned blue. ""No... no, you're lying. He hated me. He was going to destroy me.""

""He was trying to save you from yourself,"" I whispered. ""The only person who destroyed Grant Sterling... is Grant Sterling. You murdered the man who was preparing to give you everything you ever dreamed of. And for what? For a mistress who abandoned you the second the cash ran out, and a mother who sold you out to federal prosecutors in exchange for a slightly better prison cell.""

""Margaret confessed?"" Grant gasped, his voice cracking into a high-pitched whine of betrayal. ""She blamed me?""

""She gave them every detail, Grant. From the concrete in Kentucky to the crushed digitalis in Dad’s tea. The state of Kentucky is seeking the death penalty for Tessa's murder. And New York will ensure you spend the rest of your life in a supermax facility without ever seeing the sky again.""

Grant lunged across the table, his chains snapping taut against the floor anchors. ""Rosalind! Please! You have the best legal team in the world! Tell them I was mentally unstable! Tell them I had a breakdown! Don't let them execute me, Rosalind! I’m still your husband! You loved me!""

I stood up slowly, smoothing the wrinkles from my jacket. I looked down at the pathetic, weeping monster who had tried to steal my life.

""My husband was a fiction,"" I said with absolute finality. ""You are just an empty shadow. Goodbye, Grant.""

As the guards dragged him away, screaming my name in terror, I walked out into the crisp, clean air of freedom, never to look back again.
