Chapter 3 - Cracks in the Facade

Across town at the opulent Whitmore penthouse, chaos had replaced luxury. Savannah sat on the white velvet sofa, her hands shaking violently as she scrolled through social media headlines. Every major financial and news outlet was broadcasting emergency bulletins: WHITMORE HEIRESS SENTENCING HALTED: NEW HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION TARGETS EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT.

Grant paced back and forth across the imported Italian marble, running his hands through his unkempt hair. His bespoke suit jacket was crumpled over an armchair, and an untouched tumbler of Scotch sat sweating on the glass table.

""Grant, talk to me!"" Savannah screamed, rising to her feet and clutching her swollen stomach. ""The news is saying you were married before! They’re saying the FBI is digging up a farm in Kentucky! Who is Tessa Marlow? Did you lie to me about everything?""

""Shut up, Savannah!"" Grant snarled, rounding on her with wild, bloodshot eyes. ""You don't know what you're talking about! It's a setup! Rosalind has millions stashed away in untraceable accounts. She bought off the guards, she bought off the prosecutor, and she’s trying to poison your mind so you leave me!""

""Don't you dare yell at her in her condition!"" Margaret snapped, entering from the master bedroom. She was clutching a jewelry box stuffed with Walter’s family heirlooms, her hands trembling so severely that diamonds spilled onto the floor. ""We need to leave, Grant. Right now. We take the private jet to Zurich before the banks freeze the secondary accounts!""

Savannah stared at Margaret in horror, noticing the open suitcases packed near the foyer. ""You're running? You told me this was our house! You told me Grant was taking over the entire five-billion-dollar portfolio today! You said Rosalind was a psychopathic killer who tried to poison Walter for his will!""

""She was, dear, until she opened her vicious mouth!"" Margaret hissed, shoving platinum necklaces into her leather carry-on. ""The private hangar has been notified. The pilots are prepping the Gulfstream. Pack your things or stay here and answer questions for the FBI, you silly girl!""

""She isn't getting on that plane,"" Grant muttered darkly, staring at Savannah. His tone was chilling, stripped of all the warmth and adoration he had used to seduce her six months ago. ""She knows too much. If they bring her in, she’ll crumble in two minutes.""

Savannah froze, the color draining entirely from her face. For the first time, she saw the monster hiding behind the charming smile of the man she thought was her golden ticket. ""Grant... what are you saying? I'm having your baby!""

""And that baby was supposed to secure my permanent seat on the family trust!"" Grant shouted, stepping aggressively into her personal space. ""Without Rosalind's inheritance, you are an expensive liability! You think I wanted a twenty-three-year-old receptionist with expensive taste? I needed an heir to claim the trust under the secondary clause if Rosalind died without children!""

Savannah took two steps backward, her back hitting the hallway wall. Tears of profound terror welled in her eyes. ""You never loved me. You used me to replace her.""

""I used everyone!"" Grant yelled, picking up his passport and a stack of bearer bonds from the desk. ""Now get out of my way before I make sure you disappear just like—""

He stopped himself, but it was too late. The words hung in the air, toxic and unmistakable.

Before Savannah could scream, the penthouse door burst inward with a deafening crash. A team of heavily armored tactical officers poured into the foyer, laser sights illuminating the ceiling.

""Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!""

Detective Brennan strode through the shattered entryway, flanked by four federal marshals. He looked at Grant, holding up a freshly signed federal arrest warrant.

""Grant Sterling, Margaret Sterling. You are under arrest for the aggravated murder of Walter Whitmore, conspiracy to commit murder, and interstate wire fraud."" Brennan paused, glancing toward the door as another officer brought in a secure evidence bag containing a corroded silver wedding band. ""And regarding Kentucky... the forensic team just opened the container. We found Tessa Marlow's dental records, Grant. It's over.""
