Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of Blood

The interview room was devoid of luxury, but to me, it felt like an executive boardroom. Preston Doyle sat beside me, his briefcase open, spreading stacks of audited ledgers and digital printouts across the metal surface. Across from us sat Prosecutor Davis and Detective Brennan, both looking intensely focused as the audio recorder hummed quietly between us.

""Let’s start from the beginning, Rosalind,"" Detective Brennan said, leaning his forearms on the table. ""You have thirty minutes before Grant’s high-priced defense counsel files an emergency motion to overturn the transfer stay. If you’re playing games to delay your sentence, you will face federal perjury charges.""

""I am not playing games, Detective,"" I replied steadily, resting my handcuffed wrists on the table. ""When my father died, everyone assumed I was blinded by grief. What Grant didn’t understand is that Walter Whitmore didn't just teach me how to manage wealth; he taught me how to read people. When Grant entered my life three years ago, he was charming, humble, and apparently devoted. But my father never entirely trusted his sudden rise or his overly convenient coincidences.""

I pointed toward the top folder in Preston’s stack. Preston slid it across to the prosecutor.

""Three weeks before my father’s fatal heart episode,"" I explained, ""Dad hired an independent forensic accountant to audit Whitmore Holdings’ offshore logistics channels. He discovered that Grant had quietly revived a dormant shell corporation named Vance Logistics, registered in the Cayman Islands. That same channel was used six years ago by Grant’s previous commercial venture—the venture that went bankrupt shortly before Tessa Marlow vanished.""

Davis scanned the paperwork, his eyes widening. ""This shows an attempted unauthorized wire transfer of 1.5 billion dollars dated yesterday afternoon. Hours after your sentencing.""

""Precisely,"" Preston interjected. ""Grant believed that with Rosalind convicted and Walter dead, he would inherit signature authority as executive vice president. But he made an arrogant mistake. Walter had structured the family trust with a dead-man's clause. In the event of Rosalind's incapacity or conviction, absolute fiscal authority does not pass to her spouse. It passes to a blind board of independent trustees until all legal appeals are entirely exhausted.""

Detective Brennan chuckled dryly, shaking his head. ""So he murdered your father and framed you for a fortune he couldn't even touch?""

""He didn't know the clause existed,"" I said softly, the pain of my father's memory tightening in my chest. ""He thought all he needed was my father out of the way, my conviction secured, and Savannah installed in our home to play the role of the grieving, supportive new wife. But Grant became reckless. When he visited me yesterday, drunk on his perceived victory, he couldn't resist twisting the knife. He bragged about how he silenced Tessa when she found his original fraud documents. He thought a woman facing a quarter-century in prison could do nothing with that truth.""

""What about the poison?"" Davis asked, leaning closer. ""The prosecution presented digital records showing your IP address ordering the synthetic digitalis compound that stopped Walter Whitmore’s heart. Your backup phone confirmed the delivery.""

""Preston, show them the router logs,"" I instructed.

Preston opened a thin black binder containing technical network analytics. ""We subpoenaed the smart home router logs from the Whitmore Hamptons estate. On the night the digitalis was ordered online, Rosalind was attending a charity gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art—covered by dozens of press cameras. However, the internal IP was accessed via a device logged into the guest suite. Margaret Sterling's personal tablet connected to the internal server at eight-forty-two that evening. She stayed on the dark web portal for fourteen minutes.""

Prosecutor Davis tapped his pen rhythmically against the desk, his expression hardening. ""This doesn't fully exonerate you of conspiracy, Rosalind. But it destroys the foundation of the state's timeline. If Margaret made the purchase, and Grant had financial motive to eliminate Walter...""

Suddenly, the heavy metal door clicked open. A junior detective entered, leaning down to whisper urgently into Brennan’s ear. Brennan’s eyes darkened, a slow, grim smirk spreading across his face.

""Kentucky State Police just breached the underground root cellar at the Route Nine property,"" Brennan announced, looking directly at me. ""Underneath two layers of poured concrete, ground-penetrating radar picked up a metal container. They’re bringing in the jackhammers right now.""
