Chapter 5 - The Public Unraveling

Twenty-four hours after my sentencing hearing was dramatically stopped, the grand ballroom of the Manhattan Federal Courthouse was packed to maximum capacity with hundreds of reporters, flashing television cameras, and stunned corporate shareholders.
The media frenzy had reached a fever pitch. The narrative had flipped upside down. The supposed ""Black Widow Heiress"" was now recognized as the heroic target of a grotesque, premeditated framing orchestrated by a serial killer and his family.
I walked onto the raised press platform wearing a sharp, charcoal-tailored suit, my head held high, my hair swept back in an elegant, professional chignon. There were no handcuffs. There were no guards flanking my sides. Behind me stood Prosecutor Davis, Detective Brennan, and the entire senior board of Whitmore Holdings.
""Ladies and gentlemen,"" Prosecutor Davis announced, stepping to the bank of microphones. ""Earlier today, the State of New York officially dismissed all charges against Rosalind Whitmore with prejudice. A formal finding of factual innocence has been entered into the record. Furthermore, federal grand juries in New York and Kentucky have returned a sixty-four-count indictment against Grant Sterling and Margaret Sterling, including charges of first-degree premeditated murder, federal securities fraud, grand larceny, and the capital murder of Tessa Marlow.""
The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding storm of light. Shouted questions echoed throughout the cavernous room.
I stepped forward, raising one hand to silence the roar. The room instantly fell into an absolute, breathless hush.
""Three months ago,"" I began, my voice steady, resonant, and calm, ""my late father, Walter Whitmore, was taken from this world by people he welcomed into his home. Those people believed that greed and cruelty could conquer truth. They believed that because I chose kindness and patience during my marriage, I was weak. They mistook my grace for ignorance.""
I looked directly down the barrels of the national television cameras, knowing that in the detention holding cell down the street, Grant would be watching this exact broadcast.
""To the shareholders, employees, and partners of Whitmore Holdings: our company’s foundations remain unshakable. The 1.5 billion dollars that was illegally routed toward overseas accounts has been fully recovered and frozen by federal marshals. Effective immediately, I am resuming my role as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. Every executive brought in under Grant Sterling’s fraudulent tenure has been terminated for cause, and comprehensive independent audits have commenced.""
I paused, letting the weight of my next words sink into the conscience of the public.
""To Savannah Brooks,"" I continued, addressing the woman who had smirked at my ruin, ""your association with my husband was built on a foundation of stolen money and blood. While the law will determine your culpability in the attempted flight, the luxury lifestyle you envisioned has ceased to exist. The Hamptons estate is locked. The jewelry has been retrieved. You will leave my father’s home with nothing more than what you brought into it.""

A reporter from the New York Times shouted above the fray: ""Mrs. Whitmore, what do you say to Grant Sterling, who is currently facing two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole?""
I offered a small, chilling smile that was captured by every camera in America. ""I have only six words for Grant: Nobody is coming to rescue you.""
