Chapter 4 - The Confession Room

The cold fluorescent lights of the federal interrogation center cast deep shadows across Margaret Sterling’s tear-stained face. Stripped of her stolen emeralds, her designer silk scarf, and her arrogance, she looked like what she truly was: an aging, terrified conspirator facing the remainder of her life behind iron bars.

Across the stainless-steel table sat Assistant United States Attorney Vance and Detective Brennan.

""Your son is currently in room four, Margaret,"" Brennan said quietly, sliding a legal yellow pad across the table. ""He’s already claiming that the idea to poison Walter Whitmore came entirely from you. He says you were furious that Walter discovered the Cayman shell company and threatened to cut Grant out of the family entirely.""

""He said what?"" Margaret gasped, her voice shrill and trembling with disbelief. ""That ungrateful little wretch! I sacrificed everything for him! When he came home five years ago with blood on his shirt from Kentucky, who helped him rent the backhoe? Who burned the girl's clothes in the incinerator? I did!""

The federal prosecutor leaned back, smiling faintly. ""Thank you for putting that on the record, Mrs. Sterling. The microphones are recording every word.""

Margaret’s eyes widened in sheer panic as she realized what she had just admitted. She slapped her hands over her mouth, but the truth had already broken free.

""Grant doesn't care about you, Margaret,"" Brennan pressed, leaning in close. ""He was ready to board that Gulfstream with the bearer bonds and leave you behind to face the music. If you want to avoid spending your remaining years on federal death row, you need to tell us exactly how Walter died.""

Broken, defeated, and consumed by the bitter sting of her son's betrayal, Margaret collapsed forward, weeping uncontrollably. ""It was Grant's idea... all of it. Walter was too sharp. He was going to have Grant audited by the SEC on Monday morning. Grant had stolen over forty million dollars from the subsidiary accounts to pay off his old gambling debts in Atlantic City.""

""How did you administer the digitalis?"" the prosecutor asked.

""I... I bought it online using Rosalind's backup phone while she was at the charity ball,"" Margaret sobbed, the ugly truth spilling out like poison. ""I used gloves. I wore her old dressing gown so the hallway security cameras would catch the silhouette and assume it was Rosalind. Then, on Tuesday morning, Grant crushed the pills and stirred them into Walter's morning organic tea while Rosalind was in the shower. We took the medicine bottle and pressed Rosalind’s sleeping hands against it while she was resting on the sofa later that afternoon. We planned every detail! We thought the police would close the case as an open-and-shut inheritance poisoning!""

In the adjacent observation room, behind the one-way glass, I stood listening to every single word. Preston Doyle stood beside me, quietly placing a comforting hand on my shoulder.

""You're free, Rosalind,"" Preston whispered, his eyes shining with emotion. ""The prosecutor has already drafted the emergency dismissal of all charges. The judge signed the exoneration order ten minutes ago. You're going home.""

I didn't cheer. I didn't celebrate. I closed my eyes and whispered a silent prayer to my father. He had always told me that truth possessed an undeniable gravity; no matter how deeply it was buried under lies and concrete, it would always pull itself back into the light.

""Not home yet, Preston,"" I replied, turning toward the doorway with quiet authority. ""Grant thought he could steal Whitmore Holdings and humiliate me in front of the world. Now, I want to look him in the eyes when his kingdom burns to ashes.""
