Chapter 9 - The Healer's Choice

Elena looked down at the man kneeling at her feet. This was the king of New York’s shadows—a man whose name made governors tremble and cartel bosses retreat—sobbing against the rough cotton of a dishwasher's uniform.
For hours, through the mud and the gunfire and the agony of her mangled flesh, she had thought of nothing but survival. She had felt anger so hot it burned away fear. But looking at him now, seeing the raw, bleeding hollows in his eyes, she saw the wounded boy she had found in the alley three years ago, clinging to pride while bleeding onto the wet asphalt.
""Darius,"" she said softly.
He didn't lift his head, trembling as if awaiting an executioner's blow.
""Look at me.""
He slowly raised his eyes, terrified of what he might find in her expression.
With great care, ignoring the searing pain in her palms, Elena reached down and peeled away the bloody medical gauze from her right hand, letting the stained cotton fall to the carpet. She cupped his scarred cheek with her trembling, raw fingers. The sensation of his rough stubble against her torn skin was warm and real.
""When I stitched your shoulder in that hospital alley,"" Elena whispered, her voice steady and clear, ""you told me that love in your world was a liability. You said that anyone who entered your life was a target. I chose to enter it anyway because I believed you were better than the blood on your hands.""
""I failed you,"" he choked out.
""You let suspicion blind you,"" she corrected him gently. ""You allowed fear to speak for you. When you told me you would kill me if I ever returned to this city, part of me died in that elevator, Darius.""
A sharp tear escaped his eye, tracing down to the corner of his jaw. ""Tell me how to fix it. Tell me what to do. I will burn this city to the waterline. I will surrender the empire. I will walk away from every dock, every vault, every territory. Just don't leave me in the dark.""
Elena looked around the grand ballroom—at the overturned tables, the ruined chandeliers, the shattered remnants of an empire built on terror and paranoia.
""We don't burn it,"" she said firmly. ""We rebuild it. We cut out every snake who profits from misery. We use the shipping lines for legitimate enterprise, just like we planned before Albert poisoned your ear. But you will never dismiss my voice again. You will never put an empire above the woman who bleeds for you.""

Darius reached up, wrapping his large hands over her wounded wrists, pressing them to his heart. ""On my soul, Elena. On my mother's grave and the air in my lungs. My life belongs to you. Every decision, every breath, from this night until my last.""
He rose slowly to his feet, swept her up into his arms despite her protests of being covered in harbor grime, and carried her out of the ballroom, turning his back forever on the shadows that had nearly swallowed their world.
