Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage Unhinged

The ballroom of the Grand Sovereign was a glittering sea of black tuxedoes, emerald silk, and diamonds bought with blood. Crystal chandeliers hummed overhead, casting a warm golden light over the crowded tables where the city's most dangerous figures clinked glasses. At the center of the raised dais sat Uncle Albert, sporting a bespoke burgundy velvet dinner jacket, his silver hair combed back with pomade, holding court like a crowned emperor.

Beside him sat Lorenzo Romano, the head of the rival syndicate, his scarred face relaxed in a triumphant sneer. For months, these two families had waged an invisible war in the shadows. Tonight, the atmosphere smelled of an uneasy, lucrative armistice.

Elena stepped out from behind the heavy velvet service curtains, carrying a silver tray laden with champagne. The heat in the room was stifling. She moved methodically along the outer wall, keeping her chin tucked against her collarbone.

""Refill here, girl,"" a burly underboss demanded, waving a fat cigar without even turning his head to look at her.

Elena poured the sparkling wine, her hands shaking slightly from muscle fatigue. The gauze around her right hand was already turning a dull pink as blood seeped through the thick cotton layers.

At the center table, Albert tapped his gold signet ring against a crystal glass. The chatter in the grand ballroom died down to a respectful hush.

""Friends, family, and brothers of the five boroughs,"" Albert began, standing tall with a broad, paternal smile. ""We gather tonight under a somber cloud, yet with bold vision. As many of you know, our house suffered a tragic breach of trust. A woman we welcomed into our inner sanctum—a woman who wore the family ring—chose greed over loyalty.""

Elena froze near the service station, her fingers digging into the edge of her silver tray.

""My nephew, Darius, in his infinite mercy, sought only to spare her life by sending her into exile,"" Albert continued, dropping his head in an exquisite pantomime of grief. ""Tragically, our intelligence informs us that Lorenzo’s rogue elements—acting without their Don's consent—ambushed her vehicle on the turnpike. Elena is gone. Her betrayal is forgiven in death, and her loss cements this new, unbreakable alliance between the Romano house and our own.""

A ripple of murmured toasts swept the tables. Men lifted their glasses to the 'tragic loss' of the Don’s wife, eager to secure their cut of the newly merged smuggling routes.

Elena’s heart burned with pure acid. Albert had painted himself as the merciful uncle and Lorenzo as the reformed partner, wiping away their conspiracy in one elegant lie while Darius was presumed out hunting shadows.

Then, the high arched mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open with the force of an explosion.

The double doors splintered off their brass hinges, crashing down onto the parquet floor. A freezing gust of autumn wind and rain swept into the heated room, carrying the sharp scent of ozone, spent gunpowder, and raw fury.

Darius stood in the threshold.

His custom shirt was torn, soaked in black harbor mud, and stained with the blood of Albert's search party. Behind him, two dozen elite bodyguards, armed with tactical carbines, moved into defensive positions along the mezzanine, cutting off every fire escape and service exit.

The entire ballroom turned to stone. The laughter vanished. The music stopped mid-note.

Darius didn't look at the politicians. He didn't look at Lorenzo Romano. His eyes, burning with a terrifying, unhinged madness, swept the room from left to right like an apex predator searching for a scent.

""Nobody moves,"" Darius said, his voice quiet, flat, and chillingly distinct. ""Nobody breathes until I find what belongs to me.""
