Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Queen

Six months later, the Grand Sovereign Hotel reopened its doors under an entirely new administration.

The heavy, suffocating velvet curtains had been stripped away, replaced with soaring panes of modern glass that flooded the ballroom with pristine afternoon sunlight overlooking the harbor. The underground gambling dens beneath the docks had been shuttered, their real estate converted into maritime logistics facilities and medical supply hubs managed directly by Elena’s foundation.

In the penthouse high above Manhattan, the rain still struck the glass on autumn evenings, but the cold dread had evaporated.

Elena stood beside the marble island where Darius had once laid out those six poisoned photographs. Her hands were fully healed, though faint, silvery lines traced across her knuckles—permanent reminders of the night she survived the marsh. On her left ring finger, the platinum crest sat polished and bright, catching the golden rays of the setting sun.

A pair of strong arms slipped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, warm chest. Darius rested his chin against the crown of her head, inhaling the lavender scent of her hair.

""The board approved the new clinic construction in the South Bronx,"" he whispered against her ear, his voice rich and peaceful. ""No syndicate kickbacks. No under-the-table protection fees. Fully funded through our maritime trust.""

""And the Romano family?"" she asked, leaning back into his embrace.

""Lorenzo retired to his vineyard in Sicily last month,"" Darius smiled faintly. ""His son knows our borders. He knows that if so much as a stray shipment crosses our docks without your signature, the agreement ends. The city has never been this quiet, my love.""

""It's not quiet because they fear you, Darius,"" Elena said, turning around within his arms and placing her smooth hands against the lapels of his charcoal suit. ""It's quiet because they respect that we cannot be divided.""

Darius looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with a reverence that had only deepened with every passing day. He remembered the broken scullery girl standing among the dishwashers, holding a silver tray with mangled, bloody fingers, refusing to kneel before the wolves.

""Tonight is the annual charity gala at the hotel,"" he said softly, lifting her right hand to press a lingering kiss to the faint scars across her knuckles. ""Every senator, commissioner, and business leader will be waiting in the grand hall.""

Elena smiled, a spark of playful brilliance lighting up her hazel eyes. ""Should I wear the emerald gown or borrow Mrs. Gable's kitchen apron?""

May you like

Darius laughed—a rich, full sound that filled the penthouse with pure light. He pulled her flush against him, kissing her lips with a passion that banished every ghost of their past.

""You wear the crown, my Queen,"" he murmured against her mouth. ""And anyone who dares tell you where to sit will answer to the Don."""
