Chapter 2 - Cold Mud and Broken Glass

Elena gasped for air as icy brackish water soaked through the wool of her travel coat, pulling her down into the marsh silt behind Pier 42. Every breath burned like lye in her lungs. Behind her, the harsh beams of tactical flashlights swept across the rusted iron beams of the old cargo cranes, accompanied by the guttural barking of two Belgian Malinois.

""Check the waterline!"" a voice shouted through the gale. It was Marcus, Albert’s most vicious hitman. ""The old man wants her ring finger brought back in a jar to verify the contract! Don't shoot center mass—make sure she feels every second of the water!""

Elena pressed her body into the freezing mud beneath a rotting wooden pallet. Her designer leather boots had been lost miles back in the river sludge; her bare feet were torn and bleeding from jagged fragments of green bottle glass buried in the gravel. She clamped her teeth over her lip until copper flooded her mouth, refusing to make a sound.

Three hours ago, she had stood in a penthouse surrounded by Italian marble and imported silk. Now, the bitter reality of the criminal empire she had married into stripped away all illusions. Darius had looked right through her tears. He had believed the doctored photographs without demanding a trial, trusting the whisper of an uncle who smelled like church incense and expensive cigars over the woman who had once saved his life in a garbage-strewn clinic alley.

A flashlight beam danced three inches from her eyes, refracting through the cracks of the pallet. Elena closed her eyes, praying silently. The hound snapped its jaws, pawing furiously at the timber just above her ribs.

""Over here! The dog caught a scent near the pilings!""

Just as Marcus reached down with a gloved hand to yank the pallet aside, an engine roared from the access road above. Twin halogen beams shattered the gloom, blinding the search party. The scream of spinning tires on wet asphalt gave way to the sharp, rhythmic crack of suppressed automatic gunfire. Marcus’s body jerked before collapsing into the dark water with a dull splash. The remaining mercenaries scattered, shouting in panic as shadows moved with terrifying precision through the downpour.

Elena pulled herself deeper into the muck, terrified it was Romano’s clean-up crew arriving to finish Albert’s work. Through the haze of rain, she watched an elite squad eliminate the hunters without a single wasted shot. Then, a tall silhouette stepped into the pool of light. For a fraction of a second, her heart stopped—the broad shoulders, the rigid posture, the unmistakable authority.

It was Darius.

He was screaming her name into the storm, his composure completely shattered. He kicked through the brush, dropping to his knees in the sludge without regard for his bespoke wool or hand-stitched leather. ""Elena! Elena, look at me! Where are you?""

May you like

She watched him from her hiding spot beneath the pallet, her breath hitching. The sheer panic in his baritone voice would have melted her heart yesterday. But tonight, the memory of his threat rang louder than his frantic cries: I'll kill you myself. She remembered the cold calculation in his stare when he held those photographs. If she stepped out now, weak and cornered, what guarantee did she have that this wasn't another trap?

Elena waited until his squad moved deeper along the shoreline toward the far pier. Dragging her trembling limbs out from under the rotting wood, she crawled backward into the darkness of the old maintenance tunnel that connected the harbor docks to the commercial kitchen basements of the Grand Sovereign Hotel. She would not beg him for mercy a second time. If she was going to expose the rot that threatened to destroy them both, she would do it in front of the entire underworld assembly where his pride couldn't hide the truth.
